Maybe the Cypress CM-388 is what you need. We had a similiar discussion on the Mac forum some time ago.

The CM-388 converts digital video and audio to analog. So the signal chain would be :

Apple TV out HDMI (picture and sound) ->

CM-388 ->HDMI - DVI adapter/spdif out -> BV7 DVI in

->rca out/composite out -> SCART adapter -> BV7 SCART

You should now have HD picture and digital sound (PCM, DD, DTS) in your mainroom, and SD (composite) picture and analog stereo sound in linkrooms - simultaneously. BTW can Apple TV output digital and analog sound simultaneously?

...probably to be able to distribute the signal to link rooms. Digital cannot be distributed. Otherwise HDMI connection would be fine.

So where is the constraint on using HDMI ? is it the 7-40-mk-II ?

Because the ATV has an HDMI output ...

I am using the HDMI output from my MacMini to my BV8 so that I can go directly to using the BV's DAC on the assumption that it is better than Apple's

Its the BV7 40 MK II, with the PCM upgrade. I have a toslink to coaxial digital converter and I am using the Apple TV in composite mode for video. Thought the DAC Magic may improve the sound on the master TV and or the link rooms. I have no HDMI input. Sound is analog to the link rooms.

Can't you just use HDMI for both sound and image from the ATV to the BV7?

HDMI transfers high resolution sound and should have no trouble at all with the multichannel 5.1DD signal from the ATV; and the TV should be able to handle that again without a need for a separate DAC, there are DACs in the BV7, and the Cambridge DacMagic can't handle multichannel.

I just use a DVI adapter with pins 14 and 16 shorted with a paperclip.

I have an Apple TV connected to a BV7-40MKII. On the sound front I use SPDIF on the Apple TV to the BV7 via digital converter ($10 converter) to the coaxial input in the TV. RCA left and right channels on the Apple TV are also connected to manage link rooms. Video is connected via a composite connection and a hack to get colour.

All CD's are in iTunes sync'd with the Apple TV running the Apple lossless format.

My Questions are; would I benefit from a Cambridge DAC Magic to improve the digital sound quality thru the BV7 and if so would that effect the 5.1 sound also used for the Apple TV rented movies?
