Just been down to my local dealer to try and get a replacement BS2 battery and can't believe how much B&O want for a replacement. Bearing in mind the BS2 is still in production, how can £67 for a rechargeable battery (that doesn't include fitting) be justified???

Mind you, Sky charge £65 for an engineer call out, even though we all pay £50/month+ for our subscription. That's more of a rip-off IMHO. BT don't charge when you have problem with your line, neither do my broadband provider who 'lease' you your router. Why don't Sky do the same? Worse, when Sky replace the box, they give you a refurb box and not a new-for-old replacement.

I kicked off and they are coming around for free now.

I admit it is a self-serving comment, but there is no call-out or repair fee or repair charge withn Cable! It's something people forget when price comparisons are made.

Simon

Guess this is all getting a bit off-topic re cost of battery replacement, but what really annoys me about Sky and Virgin Cable is the cost creep and the pretended bundling of channels that are broadcast FTA anyway (or in Sky's case, the encryption of certain channels that are free on other platforms.) OK, £67 for a battery is nothing compared to standard call-out charges and you can't expect services for nothing. But I do (where there's advertising).......... so my Sky box is unsubscribed working on favourites......... Channel 5 etc via Freeview on another STB connection.........

I think that's generally their plan, if your are out of your "contract" i.e. it's over a year since you got anything new from them, then they will eventually waive their fee if you threaten to "rip it all out" etc. Of course you may to sign up for another year but then you were going to anyway.

Both our parents received a new Sky+ box (inplace of a standard Sky box) after threatening to cancel when there boxes began playing up (loosing channels etc., the start of the end for the power supply).

Re: Replacement BS2 Battery = Massive Rip Off >:|

j0hnbarker:

B&O don't offer justified prices. The problem is people pay it, ourselves included, so they charge it.
Is your BS2 less than three years old? The battery on one of mine was down to 1 hr of play time and within seven days of warranty expiration. I took it to the local B&O store and they sent it to the repair center (Arlington Heights, IL in the USA) and it came back 10 days later totally refurbished, including a new shell, for no cost to me. This is one of the many reasons that I buy B&O products - I have always recieved superior service. If you are still under warranty, I should think that you can expect a similar result.

Re: Replacement BS2 Battery = Massive Rip Off >:|

Long live Vintage B&O!
Oh, don't get me wrong, vintage B&O has it's own challenges, but they are well within the realm of the average human to disassemble, repair competently, and reassemble.

The battery is indeed unusual, in that it has four lugs moulded to it as Jeff suggested. Not sure how anyone could replace it with a non-B&O substitute as it fits tightly into one side of the BS2 casing.

I know my limits and doubt I'd ever open it again! To check everything works, I plugged it into the docking station last night to charge and upload some files and it seemed fine. It was also fine to listen to this morning, apart from the fact that pressing the down button did not take me back to the start of the current song, but rather to the previous track in that playlist. I can't remember if it always did this, but if that's the extent of the functionality I have lost then I'm a happy man.

I did wonder whether this small resistor (or whatever it is - there are a few of them mounted on the PCB) had dropped off my board, or had always been floating around inside the case as I would have expected it to stop working after my ham-fisted attempts to open it up...?

Re: Replacement BS2 Battery = Massive Rip Off >:|

j0hnbarker:

The cover does indeed pop off. I opened the unit up and got to the battery, but not without pulling out the ribbon cable from the keypad to the PCB right out of its socket! Then I seemed to knock off a small resistor from the PCB, so by the time I got it back together I ecpected it to be well and truly rogered. Thankfully by some miracle it is still working. Never again will I look inside!

Are you sure they are supposed to be screws? They almost look like there are some sort of blanks there that perhaps you depress (outwards and then perhaps up) -sort of like a ring-clip??? The manual doesn't seem to show any rotation?

Maybe try a ball point pen and see if you get any movement from these "blanks?"

Re: Replacement BS2 Battery = Massive Rip Off >:|

I downloaded the service manual (1 side!) but it shows the removal of two screws to release the dock so that the case can be twisted and separated. Problem is on my dock there are two blanks, as opposed to screws, on the dock! There is a small screw inside the SD card slot which I have removed, but the case does not want to rotate with this out, and I'm frightened of wrecking the bloody thing!

AAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Re: Replacement BS2 Battery = Massive Rip Off >:|

j0hn,

I no longer have a BS2 to play with -regarding trying to open it... but, I have found that the batt is a Lithium Ion. Still trying to find specs, but I am sure it is indeed an off-the-shelf battery for $10.00! Output specs on the charger/adapter should help narrow it down, maybe.

EDIT...

You are SILVER... the service manual is on site! It shows how to dismantle for battery replacement. Though an illustration, the battery does look to be rather special w/ (4) mounting lugs... UGGH!
