The original wiring was all laid out under the floor boards in lead pipes which ran alongside the lead gas pipes and all were laid out a bit like railway lines. In addition the bell pushes for the servants quarters (no longer used in my time!) also ran along side by side. Every now and then, my father would pull up some floor boards and take out some of the rubber covered wires and re-lay plastic ones. He used to take the lead out and it usually paid for any work that needed to be done. The discussion below is amusing as well! All countries think either their system is by far the best and all other countries are mad or despair at the multiple standards! I do remember growing up and our house had new square three pin plugs, older round three pin plugs (two sizes!) two pin plugs and gas points, all in the space of a few feet!
