&lt;p&gt;It seems I have one of each!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;BUT it does make a huge difference to the sound of SKY if you have the 5.1 Dolby card in the Avant, etc.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Sky+ and Sky HD boxes don&amp;#39;t have co-axial output, they output the digital sound through optical output. The Avant doesn&amp;#39;t have optical input, only co-axial. Hence the need to convert one to the other.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;BTW be aware that the convertors are NOT uni-directional. &amp;quot;Optical in-Coaxial out&amp;quot; cannot be used the other way round and vice versa.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Maplins in the UK do an optical to coaxial convertor. You will need a toslink optical lead and a phono lead to go into the back of your Avant.&lt;/p&gt;
