my DVD1 went slowly like that it. first it would skip chapters and sections of films then one day it said "no disc".

i opened it up, cleaned the laser carefully and gently with isopropyl alcohol on ear cotton bud and it was back to normal operation after that. Dx = the laser could be seen to be completely obscured by dust.

not sure if that is definitely the Dx for your unit as the DVD stopped playing suddenly rather than slowly but try cleaning the laser with the method above.

Thanks for the hint ... I believe that over time the read-in times went worse actually. I actually hardly used the DVD player as the system is the bedroom system only. The countes are minimal: only 13 days of total DVD playback, one day VCD and another one day for CD.

What would hint that I would need a new mechanism? (and would you know what I'd have to invest?)

try cleaning the laser properly... if that fails, i got a bad feeling that you might need a new laser mechanism. did the avant suddently stop playing dvds or did u notice that the read time was slower. what are the service counters like? has the dvd been used a lot to make you believe that its the cd mechnism failing?

Unfortunately not ... the wiring to the DVD player is all internal and not via one of the Scarts - but thanks for suggesting!!

I have an Avant VCR and even though the VCR is integrated, it has an external scart lead. Does your DVD Avant have a scart lead at the back that may have come loose? Just try pushing it to make sure it's firmly in place.

I'm clutching at straws for you.

I don't work in an IT call centre, honest! but have you tried powering off the Avant for a few minutes? What have you got to loose?

Hello everyone,

all of a sudden my Avant 28 DVD does not play DVDs or even CDs anymore. (now this happened after my little niece was supposed to watch her DVDs and instead, I fear, played piano on the beo4)

When putting a DVD into the drive, the display only shows "DVD <>"

and when I go into "Menu", "Setup", "00Go", "DVD", the screen shows a message I have never seen before:

DVD region setup

NOTE!

DVD SOURCE SELECTED

LOADER CLOSED

NO DISC IN DRIVE

... and then there's nothing to setup or change (I see that message not matter whether there's a DVD in the drive or not)

Has anyone got a clue for me what to do here? I can still hear the motor spinning when trying to access a DVD

Is there a way to reset the Avant DVD?

Would anyone know what have made this happen?
