Did you ever actually experience that a tape loses info to the extent
that nothing but hiss can be heard anymore ?

Over my 35 years with reel-reel tapes, I never experienced anything like that, even
when playing tapes that were much older.
Even wire recordings seem to keep their recorded info surprisingly well.

Some tapes provide a slightly less detailed treble response but I never experienced
much lack of volume.

Spanish Flyer, If you are sure that there is sound recorded on
the tapes, check that all buttons and knobs are set to playback according to
the user manual and that the cables and plugs are correctly wired for the Beocord.

Hi Spanishflyer

Have you tried to push the monitor button another thing is that when tapes

get very old you cannot hear anything because the magnitification is gone

try with a new tape and record something on it .

Simple things can easily be overlooked, and I'm not a techie, but

1 Did you press the speaker button that corresponds with the socket that you plugged your speakers into?

2 Is there anything on the tapes?

Hi guys,

Just became a member, so I say hello to everyone and hope to enjoy it here and also learn some from the gurus...

The whole idea right now is to find information about a Reel to Reel tape recorder I inherited from my father. It is from the 1960's and has only been used occasionally for a few years and then stored in a cardboard box till the present.

I also recovered a docen or so tapes that I want to save in CD's, and here is where I have a problem.

I connected the tape to mains, switched it on and it runs just fine; PLAY, FAST FWD, FAST REVERSE, all OK. Problem is that I cannot get any sound out of it; tried speakers 6 Ohm, also headphones, but I only get a grey sound, you know, just "SHHHHHHHHHHH......".

I'm not an electronic specialist of any kind, but quite a good handiman, so as long as it is a tester, soldering or any mechanical issue, I can deal with, no problem.

Right now I'm bogged down due to this problem, so I would very much appreciate it if someone could give me some hints on how to proceed; I'm in the process of cleaning the deck from head to toes. I've stripped it down to the frame and I'm cleaning the contacts on all cards. The old type contacts are filthy (not that I think that it's the solution to my problem, but I might as well remove that possibility).
