There will be a time when I take the DVI module with me and visite you.

This afternoon I've made a small video to show how the BV5 chassis controls the Panasonic panel.

The quality isn't that good, but enough to get an impression.

As you can see the videosignal stays the same and the panel gets the instruction over the RS232 port.

You can see the BV5 (starts with the mk3 series and also done in the BS2 mk3 or higher) adjusting the contrast and brightness settings according to the surrounding. The original pana remote is used to open the pana-menu.

Now I just need to get everthing connected correct and then make the update of the STB list in the BV5, I can see that the STB list in the HDR2 is longer and newer than the BV5, of course the HDR2 is also newer than the BV5. I'm still missing the IR eye to control the Zaptor unit.

I'm still thinking about if it's possible to buy the new Panasonic Pro plasma and the DVI update set and buy a new new SW update for this hard upgrade?

Oh, Beobuddy where can I buy this HD-ready DVI kit and how much does it cost? you can send info on PM if you want.!

Thanks

The STB in the BV5 is the same as the one in the Avant's. So you have to find out on which software table your settopbox is mentioned.

Changing the software is an easy job.

About the newest panel, I thinking of renting one for a week and just try and see what happens....

I bought the HD ready kit, which contains the DVI module, at the dealers. It costs about 290 euro. Much more then the panasonic version, which I think is the same. I could test by placing it in Beogen's BV5? Or placing it in the rented panasonic?

How is the BV5 doing? Does it exceed your expectations?

Hi Beobuddy

Thanks for asking, I can only say: YES it does.!

Got the BV5 home last Friday and tested it over the weekend, and it's sure nice and bigger than expected and thats only good!

I also picked up a Motorola STB Zaptor box and connected my HDR2 (that I couldn't use with my Avant). As a matter of fact I'm quite happy with the setup, also without the Zaptor box, though in both way it's still not digital all the way and only connected with the scart cable.

Now I just need to get everthing connected correct and then make the update of the STB list in the BV5, I can see that the STB list in the HDR2 is longer and newer than the BV5, of course the HDR2 is also newer than the BV5.
How is the BV5 doing? Does it exceed your expectations?

My experiences till now are resulting in more questions then answers...

I've received my HD ready kit. It contains of a DVI module, software and a instruction how to handle.

I had also to order the DVI extenson cable and the DVI plate. So I mounted the parts.

That's quite a job. That's because I removed the panel to install the DVI plate. Later it seemed it wasn't neccessary to remove the panel.

The extra digital audio cable goes to a free socket on the Dolby Digital board.

After entering the servicemenu, I've mentioned the DVI module in slot 2 as "camera".

Then in the socketmenu you can enter the "camera" function and rename it as PC(DVI).

So now after a PC instruction the panel switches to the DVI module.

That was expected, but also surprising because the instruction says you have to update your D7 panel and mine is a D6.

So, one question is: what does the sw -update (which has to be done via Beowise) do?

For now it seems to work.

I've attached the DVI to a pc, and I got a "new hardware found" message. First thing I saw was "Beovision 4-5".

The question still remains, where does that come from? The DVI unit has Panasonic labels on it and it hardly has any components inside.

The softwareupdate wasn't required, so again, what happens inside the panel? It probably hasn't anything to do with the DVI module.

I also attached a VGA computer monitor to the socket which goes to the panel.

I wanted to know if the different mk chassis's sends different VGA signal to the panel, has every mk a different VGA board inside?

The answer is that every chassis sends the same VGA signal to the panel. It is a standard RGB signal

So, if you want to change your panel to a newer version, then the new panel still has to handle ordinary RGB SD signal.

So, that's not the problem of changing. Only one thing I can think of is that the panel has to scale the SD signal to the right resolution of the new panel. And it is common known that the internal scalers of the panels aren't the best.

It's obvious why the BS3 has its own scaler and sends the recalculated signal through DVI to the panel.

The BV5 ('s panel) does it analog versus BS3 digital.

But then arisses the question about formats 1, 2 and 3. What does it do to the videosignal from the chassis to the panel?

Nothing.

Changing formats didn't influence the picture on the pc-monitor, so the formats are set through the RS232 cable!

I hope and have not discovered/searched yet if the panel has an automatic wide setting. If it has then the RS232 instructions could be missed.

That's for now, will be continued..

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?

Yaaahoo

UPS have delivered the first part of the delivery from Lee today, so I now have a BV5 motor tv stand

I do not hope that UPS will leave the BV5 like they did today with the pakage they just droped it of and I wasn't home to collect.

Cheers

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?

hebo:

@Beobuddy

What do you think about your BV5 compared to your Avant? Picture, sound ect...

The BV5 is more critical to the videosignal it gets. That is obvious and of course I could have expected that.

SD signals in the 4:3 format aren't always that pretty, like discoverychannel. I have to be honest about that.

But there are also programs, like here the daily broadcasted (news) shows on RTL4 and Ned3, which looks very good.

The only thing is that the screen is much bigger than the avant has so the viewing distance has to be at least 2-2,5 meters.

The sound is the same as the avants. The speakers are the same and the DD/DTS board is also the same. So no difference, sounds still great.

But after having a'n avant from 1995 till now, the BV5 is (always has) a stunning look and is a real eyecatcher for everyone who enters the room.

I'm really proud of this baby

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?

Follow this thread with great excitement.

In the BV4 service manual is an explanation how the change some HEX codes in the panel (or DVI module?) setup to make a Panasonic screen a B&O screen.

It's done in the panel itself.

That's a conclusion I made because the procedure also concerns changing panels to B&O versions in BV5's .

Most BV'5 don't have a DVI socket.. The panel of a BV5 is connected only through VGA (RGBHV, no data) and RS232.

If there is a DVI module in the panel then it is directly attached to a cable which ends at one side of the BV5 as an extra socket.
