Not really. It's what you're supposed to do if you connect to an external non-B&O source. No way to escape that.

No matter what kind of setup you have, you would have to set a working level for the speakers, relative to the output level of your source, if you're using the line-INs.

Yes Soundproof, I just meant that not controlling the volume with a Beo remote is a bit risky, for instance when someone in a previous thread suggested having the Beolab 5's at maximum. I feel like that is risking it, one small stray signal and you'll be scared to death

The sync cable is in my opinion a great "add-on" if used with third party products, and it's always mentioned in the instruction manual to be used if the Beolab 5's are not connected to Beo equipment.

That was what I meant with a "workaround"...

This only applies for systems with a fixed line level output and if your BL5s are miles away from each other, since the ir of the beo4 is so strong nothing have to be synchronized.

In most cases there is pre-out on the receiver and the amp will take care of the volume adjustment. there is nothing to be synchronized. Just read Soundproof and Dave Moulton's replies.

Yes, but Soundproofs and Dave solution, is after all a "workaround" solution.

The "new" beolab 5 have a new volume chip and the software version is 3.00.

I ask keith Sanders a question and this is what I told me:

The latest release is Software 3.00a and provides the following improvement is only for production due to update of the volume control IC and new design of the according PCB meaning your units cannot be updated to version 3.00a unless the associated PCB is also replaced.

That's right, and I would even go one further and say it is false marketing. We should wright a letter to B&O and ask for a free software update, since the update isn't going to be cheap, the speaker need to be disassembled.

From what I was led to believe we are talking hundreds of euros.

What Soundproof says is right. It's also approximately what I do. Once you have the default levels set on the Beo4, you use it to bring the speakers in and out of standby, and use the receiver volume (on its remote, probably) to control the level of the BL 5s. I don't see a problem here, with what the threadstarter wishes to do, regardless of the generation of the BL5s?

Line in to the speakers will accept a variety of external sources - B&O's only requirement is that the signal level should not be in excess of 2V RMS, if it is higher, a passive attenuator should be used.

If you follow my suggestion in another thread of finding a good working volume for the speakers, and storing that, then you can control additional up/down volume with the receiver (in this case the Onkyo). Works beautifully with my setup, and should do so with any BL5 speaker.

The level I have set the speakers for, is my preferred listening level for digital music (fed via the coax s/pdif.)

When switching to a surround movie feed, I use the pre-outs on the receiver, and send the Front L/R signals to respective speakers, as the threadstarter asks. Due to how I have set up my surround system, my sound level for surround is six up "ticks" on the Beo4 (but that's just my setup, yours may differ). When I want to listen to a digital source again, I just hit LIST>RESET.

I use either my Beo4 or my universal remote to control the speakers.
