So I can't say I'm in a fixed mode. It's kind of strange when I channel surf though, as the sound perspective will shift from channel to channel!
Jazz or classical is often transmitted in surround today, I always switch those manually from 5 to 2 speakers, but that's just because I'm a curmudgeon.

As to your original question:
In quadraphonic there would be four different microphones recording four different vantage points for the performance - these would then be recreated with four distinct signals through four loudspeakers.

What you have done is duplicate a left-right signal to spread the music. Good for background listening.

Here's an illustration of the original quadraphonic theory, illustrating areas where the ears have acute frequency awareness and where this drops off.

I'll take the time one day to use this is a starting point for why one should never have speakers in the back as powerful as the ones in front if perceived verisimilitude is the goal.

As to glorified stereo ...
I'd call it muddled stereo. Glorified stereo would be if you had a properly calibrated center channel delivering a processed center channel signal from the L-R sources. The BeoSystem 3 does a good job of that.

Re: Is this quadraphonic or glorified stereo?

jandyt:

Thanks to both of you for your replies.
For the last 14 years, I've beeen watching TV in stereo with my Pentas. I have been mostly leaning towards speaker 4. <strike>Am I abnormal?</strike> <strike>Is this normal behaviour?</strike> Does any body else feel the same?

Andy T.

The BV7 we have is flanked by a set of BL4000.
Before the sw upgrade the Video was set to ALL front speakers.

Now with sw 6.3 we can select also speaker 1 mode.

For regular TV this is the most setting used.

For DVD I switch manually to 5.1

Re: Is this quadraphonic or glorified stereo?

My audio setup is BL7.1; BL8000; BL6000, and for normal TV, I normaly use speaker1. Speaker5 can be ok for movies or TV-Shows, but I never use speaker 4 for TV, neither speaker 2. Don't want to say you are abnormal, but I to me it is strange to use speaker4 for TV.

Re: Is this quadraphonic or glorified stereo?

Thanks to both of you for your replies.
For the last 14 years, I've beeen watching TV in stereo with my Pentas. It takes a lot of getting used to hearing sound from the TV.
Over the last two or three weeks I have been trying my new set up in diferent ways and I must admit that I don't like the 5 speaker setup for regular TV programs. I have been mostly leaning towards speaker 4. <strike>Am I abnormal?</strike> <strike>Is this normal behaviour?</strike> Does any body else feel the same?

Andy T.
