I agree. It also depends on what you are trading against. If it's a BV9, you'd receive a far better trade-in valuation for your old TV compared to, say, a BV8-26.

My new philosophy is to try and keep my Beovision for around 3 years max and then trade up the latest version. For example, when the BV7-40 MKIV is released, I'll consider an upgrade. The value for a BV7-40MKIII will still be high, whereas the older MKII will be reduced further.

Hi Kokomo,

I can't speak for other dealers, but PX here is run along the lines Peter detailed.

It has been well covered elsewhere on this Forum, but just to recap - there is a PX offer, just ending, that was organised centrally, whereby a minimum PX value was offered to anyone with an older B&O TV ( it had to work, and have a functioning remote). The "cost" of this PX offer was split between the dealer and B&O.

If you have a very old TV ( 70's and 80's tube sets) then obviously the PX value of £500 was superb, as the market value of these sets (other than to collectors) is about 50p - in reality, most would have been scrapped by the owners, or given away, rather than sold. So getting £500 for one was a real bonus.

As the TV offered for PX gets newer, the offer gets less generous, but even then its not bad - think about a 28" Avant VCR - most here know its still a stunnning TV, particularly for a bedroom, second room or for kids games consoles etc- but ask any 5 or 6 random people you bump into if they will give you £500 for an eight year old 28" tube TV, with a built in VCR, four feet high and a two-man lift, and once they finish laughing, they will point you to the nearest ASDA /Tesco/Comet, and the latest no-name LCD for £300 or less. Sadly, you would struggle to give it away to many people. Their loss, as we know, but still the truth.

After this offer, PX will be a negotiation, based on what you are buying and the resale value of the product you want to change.

There are VAT implications for dealing with PX products that prevent your scenario of just being able to "pocket the profit as a sort of perk" ..., aside from paying the bills, retailers carry out a secondary role as tax collectors !

All in all, its a good time to get a CRT, either as a main or secondary TV - and not a bad time to PX one.

Thanks Peter, but was this a part of B&O 'policy' or just down to the whim of particular dealer? Also, what about equipment that couldn't be offered for sale in the shop (too old perhaps) would they just dispose of it privately (as the customer could have done) and pocket the profit as a sort of perk of the job?

Most dealers will offer part exchange - however the prices offered may not be that great and you may get a better deal selling privately. It is the same as cars - more convenient to part exchange but he will look to make profit on the deal.

A few years back on a couple of occasions I part exchanged some equipment with my local dealer for new. As I only did this with the same dealership, can someone tell me if a p/x option was/is B&O policy or at the discretion of individual dealerships?

Also, does it apply worldwide or again does it just depend on the dealer?
