That's maybe a little harsh. If the price was up to around £100 with the remote included then it's a risk-free investment as the remote could be put on eBay for that kind of money if the tube failed.
If you have a couple of hundred pounds or more to spend on a TV then keep loooking for a newer one.

There is no point in being an Avant romantic. We all eventually get old and lose our attraction and I'm afraid that it has happened to Avants of this age and type.
The remote is, however, still worth £80 or so and there is your value.

In your position as a reseller of used B&O it clearly wouldn't be worth the time or effort, but to someone in need of a relatively inexpensive telly at a £100 price point you would still get a TV that displays SD Television better than a modern LCD or Plasma for as long as the tube held, with something close to your money back when the tube expired, so it isn't necessarily something to walk away from if you don't already have an Avant or newer B&O TV.

I do confess I hate to see serviceable older B&O hit the skip as the Avant is something the like of which we will never see again, so maybe I am guilty of being a romantic for older B&O. I have a particular fondness for the LX series TV's that have even less commercial appeal than the Avant!

Afraid I agree. The fact it is 50Hz is not all bad though - actually in some ways, the picture is actually better! Less processing! However I would be wary.

If you want a 28" Avant VCR, have a look at Lee's stock - he has a RF black one (silver and black are the two most desirable colours apparently - I have a blue 32" and love it!) which is £695 and will come with a warranty and will be delivered! He has a 32" model for only £100 more.

However I would also consider ringing some dealers and asking about their stock. You could well get a bargain and a warranty for less.

A 50hz model cannot be changed for a 100hz model. I can believe that the tube was replaced with a later model from the tube manufacturer as there was a known problem with early 28in Avant tubes.

Thank you Peter for your swift and knowledgable reply - I have just found out that the tube was actually changed under warrantee about 5yrs ago (after deterioration of the picture) and the TV refurbished. I assume it would have been replaced with the same 50Hz model - any chance that it would have been up-graded? Sadly, my 'local' dealer is a long way away, as I live on the coast of West Wales. I'm beginning to think that at any cost this may not be the kit to buy.

The Type 8133 is a Mk21 Avant - 28" VCR and a 50Hz tube. It is a GB model and was introduced in 1994 and discontinued in April 1997. It would have to be very cheap to tempt me! I would actually consider chatting to your local dealer - there has been a recent TV promotion and they will have plenty of Avants knocking about that they will be desperate to get rid of! These take up large swathes of a showroom and people are not buying! Get a later RF model - I would look for a DVD model personally and if you want a VCR, get a V8000.

I'm new to this forum and may become an owner of a Beovision Avant. The gentleman selling his system knows very little in the way of details about which model he has. Having researched the subject and questioned him, I'm fairly sure it is the Avant System 1 (number 8133) made in Denmark. The screen size (he measured it for me) is width 26", height 16" and the diagonal 33". He couldn't tell me whether the screen is flat or curved (it sounds curved from his description). The unit is width 2'6", height 3'6" and depth about 1'9" at the deepest part. It is the model fitted with a VCR. He cannot remember when he bought it but it does have a remote control with it's own instructions.

Is it possible to find out from this small amount of information whether it would have the troublesome 50Mhz tube or the better 100Mhz. The gentleman is fed up with my questions (a woman asking technical questions - horror of horrors) and his unit is not set up and running, (he's using a different TV), so I cannot have a demonstration, what do you think? I am grateful for your help and advice.
