The BeoMaster 4000 was my introduction to B&O (admittedly it wasn't working at the time). Still a fantastic sounding amplifier. Mine came with the tuner-preset cover - quite a rarity I believe.

The synergy of the older beomasters and these s45-2's is incredible. I currently have an airport express with external DAC as my input source and am finding the old-school meets new-school much to my liking ;)

How about some Beovox Pentas (i.e. without the built-in amps)? I once hooked up my BM5000 and Beovox Pentas and the results were pleasing at sensible listening levels.

The amplifiers in the BM7000 and 5500 are really very similar. No difference worth speaking of in power.

Indeed the mondrians have a true B&O look about them and I do like the fact they are flat pannels.

FYI : I am in Montreal Canada. Sometimes B&O sold here can be really overpriced, especially compared to the US and Europe.

I think what happens sometimes, is that whoever is selling is calling the B&O store to ask what their items are worth....

Ebay is sometimes a better (if not the only) way to go.

there is a pair of bv3000 on ebay right now, a bit expensive -but they are hard to find!

he says no international shipping, but hey -it's only california to canada!

It is very interesting to see different ideas and opinions. Indeed the CX100 lacks some bass (I have 5 of these in my home theater with a small woofer... sounds good enough for movies in this setup.) so probably not the best choice for music, I must agree.

I have owned and restored RL60s before, so I know what I am in for ....the sound is reasonable good.

Indeed the beomaster 5500 is very similar to the 5000. I never consided the S series myself as I never heard (or seen) one before.. I have no problem refoaming and cap replacing as long as I can get hold of the right caps and foams. Thank you for the Dillen tip!

As this is not an urgent project but more of a pet project, I am keeping my options open and I will sure check if I can find some S series speakers. If only to listen how they sound. The final decision will also depend on what is available here in (right now .. extremely snowy) Canada.

soundwise: the rl60 would be better than bv3000, the bl3000 would prob be similar if you can say that. regardless, the looks of the mondrians are hard to beat!

1200 dollars: a little high for my liking too! that is way too much for them! that is strong for a pair of bl5000 actives!

Any idea how they would compare in regards to a couple of redlines , soundwise ?

If you are thinking of redlines then RL60.2's are the ones to go for as the ABR's in the RL60's are more than likely to have disintegrated or are about to. Much better than the 45's which are OK but nothing special.

CX100's are fine but I would personally add a cona to up the bass.

I have some MC120.2's attached to my Beomaster 5500 (which is quite similar spec' wise) and they are just sublime and would be my personal recommendation (or S120's) but will probably need the bass drivers refoaming and will certainly benefit from a capacitor replacement on the crossovers. Member Dillen (Martin) can supply capacitor kits for most of the vintage speakers.

My pesonal opinion is that most of the 'S' series of speakers from S45's onwards are better than either redlines or CX100's but many suffer with foam rot but definately worth putting in a bit of effort to bring them back to good working order.
