A colleague of mine is using special HDMI converters that allow very long runs over CAT5 and then terminated with special boxes and short traditional HDMI cables. Not an inexpensive solution. They are available in US, so I assume pro installers everywhere have them.

From my experience, 13 meters is not in the trouble zone in terms of simply working or not. That starts around 20 meters. However, I agree that higher quality cables make a difference. I've been very happy with Key Digital. I use them personally.

At that length, I would only purchase a cable I could return, and do a "dry run" before running it through a wall or mounting it permanently. Until you have had 20m HDMI fail day 1, it's all debate. Trust me.

Thank you all for input and advise - I will do some checking round on sites, are there any sites that sell a good quality cable but not over the moon price wise.

Can anyone recommend a site to look at.

We started out with very inexpensive HDMI cables between are Blu-Ray and Satellite box. Recently when I needed longer cables I decided to try much more expensive cables. The improvement in the sound was amazing. When my wife heard the system for the first time after changing the cables she also was stunned by the dramatic improvement.

A 15m HDMI cable will do. HDMI signals don't degrade in quality - you just get to a certain length (50m I believe) and the image disappears completely. Don't get a super-duper high quality HDMI cable, just one which is well made and will last.

I'm not sure this is true. With short cables, the "Anything will do" is probable true. At longer lengths and higher bit rates the cable specifications will make a difference. At high bit rates the cable will behave as a distributed transmission line and so the cable length becomes an issue. There are plenty of HDMI cable tests on the web which show different data loss performance, not only between cable types but also between different lengths of the same cable. Of cource these are the same arguments we've heard for years regarding audio interconnects and speaker cables - the difference is in frequency, audio applications are below 20KHz whereas an HDMI cable may have a bit rate of ~ 1.5Gbps.

This isn't to say just buy expensive cables, expense does not necessarily separate well performing cables from poor

Buy the best HDMI lead you can - QED are a good starting point and source of advice. There is a noticeable difference in quality between your lower quality cable/cheaper price and your high end stuff. If I had the money to spend on a BV9 I would not be scrimping on the cable between the source and target.

To be honest, crappy cables may have trouble working (depending on the actual equipment at the ends) even at 10 m. But I agree - don't fall for any cable voodoo, just avoid the cheapest cable sets you can possibly find. When it works, the picture is as good as it can be at any distance.

I plan to upgrade from Avant to BeoVision 9, but would like to move STB about 13 meters from where the BV9 will be placed, can anyone advise on what HDMI cable I should use, so that I don't lose picture quality.
