OK... I have a SKY box and have no problem with it as the SKY box switches the format of the TV for me.
Go to the menu of the SKY box and verify that is is on 16/9 and that it is set to send the mode through the scart.
Verify that you have a fully cabled Scart cable, and that it is connected to the TV socket on the back of the sky box, not on the V.Tape socket.
When you go from one channel to another, the BV3 should automatically detect the right format and adapt accordingly.
I am not at home so I cannot tell you exactly which menu you need to go, but if you remond me tonight with a PM then I can check, if you do not find by yourself.

Thanks Phil, now suspect that it may be a scart cable issue. I don't know if my cable is fully wired or not. Short of taking the plugs apart I don't know how I can check.

Is there a 'test' I can do whilst the set and the STB are connected which will reveal that it isn't a fully wired lead? I do have other cables so I could try these.

The Sky box settings are as you advised and the cable is via the TV socket.

That's because the auto format is via scart.

I've had format issues when using a BV3 32 as a second TV via the Sky Box's RF output. When connected directly to the Sky Box via scart it was OK.

The tv will switch between format 1 and 3 depending on the voltage of pin 8 on the scart (6v or 12v), this is also known as widescreen signaling (WSS) - when you set your set-top-box to give a 16:9-feed to your TV it will use pin 8 to switch between 6v and 12v, but some boxes will have a constant "format 3"-voltage on pin 8 if they are set to 16:9. In your case this doesn't happen - the tv is being told that it receives a 4:3 signal on pin 8.

Since your Sky box is set to 16:9 there is something fishy. Do you know whitch BV3 (mk1-3) you have, and what SW you have?

Thanks for the responses.

If I am watching during the day, I switch on to either Sky News or BBC News 24, both via Sky. In both cases and particularly with BBC the rolling news ticker-tape at the bottom of the screen are partly out of frame. Switching to Format 3 makes everything OK, but of course next time I switch on it's back to Format 1. Sky picture settings are 16:9.

It's not really a big deal, just a bit frustrating. When my son first saw it he said "what's wrong with the picture?" A little embarrassing for an expensive TV!

No, you can't. The last SW updates for the BV3 mkIII (v15.1 to v15-3) introduced stuff like audio/video/standby stand options and the ability to set SPEAKER X for audio and video sources. But nothing regarding format.

Don't think you can set it to do what you want. Never found a way myself with my BV3.

Is there a way of setting the picture format of my Beovision 3 so that when the set is switched on it is in the format as it was when switched off?

Currently, it always to defaults to Format 1 which is i think is the TV switching to the format it thinks is best for the picture being shown, however I would like it to return to my last setting before I switched off but there doesn't seem to be a way of doing this.

Anyone know if there is?
