"Freeview" is a strictly UK only term for what the rest of the Europe calls terrestrial digital broadcasting, or DVB-T. Dunno if that helps, but in any case it's not a box that will convert the signal from the whatever player thing you have there now - it's a separate device for watching off-the-air broadcasts. Maybe http://www.nrk.no/informasjon/ is more helpful

But seriously, you should look into how you can configure your current picture source to do the 16:9 -> 4:3 conversion (letterboxing), if you want to keep watching it. I can't believe it wouldn't be possible.

I live in Norway, and I don't think there are any Freeview boxes around here. So, the only solution for me - it looks - is to buy myself a MX4200. If I can find one ;-)

Hi:

Where do you live (UK?)? If so any Freeview box will do the trick and you can pick these up from any electronic store. I am unsure as to the roll-out of freeview in Europe - I have only spent long periods in Spain and France and in the places I stayed, they used cable or sky.

Hi:

Someone should come along to correct me if I am wrong. A lot of the following advice is based on assumption having had a brief look at your "set top box":

I have concluded that this is not a simple set top box at all but more of a mini media server. I think that this is running windows XP and as such is more PC than television receiver. It may well have a freeview decoder installed yet this is secondary to its main function which is to stream media to all things on your wireless network.

I imagine that when you watch televison on this you have to do it through a piece of software. If this software does not allow you to do 16:9 then you will have to install another piece of software that does. However there may be compatibility issues with the decoder unit built into the machine.

This could all be a gross misunderstanding but I think I am right.

If you just want to watch freeview in 16:9 just get a cheap box that does only this for about £15 and it will solve your problem a lot easier than messing around with software, whch I think is what you are going to have to do in this situation.

It's a Fujitsu Siemens model mpc d2644. My English is not that good, but it's a box that connects the telly to the fiber cable. It's possible to play dvd's on the box as well. The same as a STB?

You can download the manual of most TVs on this site if you become a member, or for some TVs on the B&O official web site. You can then search the manual for the FORMAT feature.

even if you change the set top box to 16.9, it will not come out on your mx4000 in that format. to be short and sweet you will never get 16.9 on your mx4000, mx4002. but you can do it on an mx4200. i only know this as ive asked the same question on here and tried all the options and it dont work.

like the previous poster says, if you set your set top box to 4.3 your picture wont be squashed, but this is a pain if your mx is in a link room as you will need to change it back when in the main room

I have checked on the manuals, BV1 has indeed the Format feature, the MX4000 does not.

Just dig into the cable set to box settings and turn it to 4:3 and all will be fine.

BV1 is newer technology so it might be able to do that - your MX4000 I believe is internally pretty much the same as my MX6000, and it can only do 4:3. It's a little odd, since just about every other manufacturer has had 16:9 support as a standard feature since the mid-90s... Shame really, since the digital scaling done by an STB/DVD usually results in a noticeably worse picture than if the TV set dropped its scan height to 16:9.

You cannot change the setting on any 4:3 TV, but you can surely change the setting to 4:3 from 16:9 in your set top box setup menu.
