&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;No, this isn&amp;#39;t a problem with back-lighting. It&amp;#39;s purely the quality of the (now old) LCD panel. The newer BV7 panels have an improved refresh rate, brightness and contrast levels. I noticed that the panel just appeared around 25% brighter than my old BV7. It&amp;#39;s not a &amp;#39;problem&amp;#39; as you mention - it&amp;#39;s the TV and the panel used.&lt;br /&gt;

My old 2004 model is very &amp;#39;gloomy&amp;#39; looking, particularly when watching dark DVDs. My local dealer lent my a brand new BV7 recently, for a month, and the picture was brighter, lighter and sharper. I saw a major difference when I went back to my old panel :-/&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I guess your second-hand BV7 is similar to the above.
