Not sure if I agree here, Alex. I dislike the design of the majority of things in general and I don't think I'd live long live enough before the growing feeling kicks in on any of them.

Dave, I know what you mean, but I kind of like the growing feeling. It's something I very rarely experience and perhaps that's the main attraction.

The Beolab9s do look very modern and will double up as sculptures. So I say you should go for it. They are one of the most unique looking ones in their price range. You have to pay a lot more to get such a unique design in the high end loudspeaker industry.

Dear All:

The footprint is small but the sound is big. My grey BL 9s are about one year old when watching movies they perform; when listening to music they sound good but not great. Is the sound better than my BL 8000? Yes, but not by as much as I was expecting. Perhaps, I have not really listen to their musical ability.

I am looking forward to one day getting a pair BL 5.

However, the BL 9 integrate with surrounding beautifully. I prefer their look than the boxy speakers.

Pretty cleve, i must admit, to be honest, hehe, i actually didnt laught initially, my mind was just thinking why??? but your description summed it up ;) clever!

Hi everyone, firstly I wanted to say what a fantastic, informative website this is. I've skulked around it for years.

This thread made me laugh because having bought a pair of 9 mainly on sound quality but also on looks, I wanted to raise them out of reach of my (nearly) one year old son, my main fear being that the pretty red/green lights next to the tweeter domes would prove far too enticing to young fingers. So I had these stands made for them. They're made of granite with marble columns and once they speakers were mounted I found that the top notes sounded much clearer as they're now less swamped by furniture. I also like the fact that they are more in line with the BV7 too. They do look quite different to floor standing but I like them now and think that if they were back on the floors they might look too stubby.

I think people's opinions are always split. The day B&O designs a product which nobody hates is the day they become brand-X, where they're 'appealing to the masses'.

It's unanimous that they sound fantastic, it's the design which people seem split over.

I'd make up your own mind over them, it's your choice, not ours.

I had a BV7 with 7.2 and recently moved up to the 7.4 + BL9's. Superb. Massive difference in audio quality, particularly for movies and PS3 games. I had a mate over the other day and we were on Burnout Paradise - last played in February with the 7.2 - and the audio difference was astonishing. We both noticed sounds we simply didn't hear before.

The BL9's (with their alt's) really complement the 7.4.

I am a hardcore design fanatic. You are correct in guessing that I really love the shape and wonderful aluminium of the Beolab 8000's. I can still remember my jaw dropping when I first saw them.

More recent B&O products don't have this effect on me. They have to grow on me. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Usually I have my made up about design the first time I see it in the flesh and then my opinion doesn't change. I guess recent designs B&O designs are so different that I just can't make up my mind. It takes time. For instance, I hated the Beovision 8 when I first saw it and then it started to grow on me. Now really like it. Same thing happened with the Beolab 3, 5 and 9. Initially I didn't like the design but after a while I thought they were pretty cool.

Apart from being a design fanatic I also happen to have excellent ears. And I can only confirm what other Beoworlders have posted before. Sonically the Beolab 3, 5 and 9 are much better than any other Beolab in the range.

Really good speakers, but:

- the acoustic lens is lower than my sofa, thus the concept would be wasted in my room (the tweeter of my BL8000 is much better positionned); and

- in my opinion they look cheap compared to aluminium speakers and I am not sure about the penguin design.
