Thanks for your replies. I think that I do indeed have the cartridge (which is just the needle, right?), but perhaps it was damaged during the transport to my apartment? I can't remember if the previous owner had "protected" the needle for transport (again, I found the record player a few years ago, so my memory is a bit hazy).

The platter does turn, and the arm does move, although it causes a clean record to skip...

I have posted an entry in the BeoGram forum with a link to a video detailing what happens here:

Thanks again for your help!

If it does not have a cartridge - the needle on the end of the arm - this will be expensive - think $200.

Worth seeing what it does - see if it works mechanically - does the platter turn when you switch it on - you will need a record on the platter - and does the arm move?

Re: Hello from "Clueless about TX2"

Did you secure the MMC-pickup before walking away?

/Ola

Hello from "Clueless about TX2"

Hello everyone,

I found a B&O Beogram TX2 turntable out on the curb a couple years ago in a paper bag marked "Free". Although I listen to an occasional record (on a really wimpy, lame record player my parents bought from JC Penney), I had no idea how incredible my free find was. I think it still works, but it just needs some fixing. (It probably didn't help that the paper bag was really heavy, and kept bumping against my leg as I carried it home.)

I haven't really gotten around to figuring out what needs to be done because I've been busy with other projects, but I would like to start fixing it now. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a primer on record players (ex. It came with a "pre-amp", but I don't know what that is, and what I would plug it into).

I will eventually post more specific questions in more specific forums, but I just thought I would start out with this introduction.

Cheers!

-ThaiBinh
