I actually found an answer on your very first link, corresponding to what my friend told me:
I would like to note that Optical and Digital Coaxial cables are insufficient and will only transmit 2.0 PCM audio. In other words, only stereo...they are not capable of delivering Lossless 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.

I guess that says it all :(
But as I understand it the problem is in the connection, not in the surround decoder of the Avant.

That is simply not true. Surround sound is best delivered through a separate digital cable instead of using a simple HDMI to connect both video and surround sound. Cos from what I read on the hifi mags, the video signals will cause a lot of interference to the digital sound signal. They always recommend a separate digital connection. HDMI is just for uncompressed video and not for audio, the audio function is just there for convenience sake. However if the signal is say DSD audio or DVD-A then they can only be delivered via HDMI or special link cable.

See if it possible to get a RGB cable for the PS3 instead of the composite cable that come with it, it's rubbish.
The 16/9 issue is because the PS3 don't tell the Avant it's 16/9.

I've been googling a bit and it seems it's the same cables as for the PS2, so I'll try and dig those cables out of the mess in my basement :)

I also have problems with some video files when I convert my DVDs so I can watch them through the PS3, where the rear speakers doesn't turn on, but when I press SPEAKER 5 then it sounds normal. Pretty strange.

Regarding this problem I have tried different methods of encoding, also to find out which formats the PS3 will play, and I found out that if it is an AVI file the rearspeakers automatically turn on, if it's a MP4 file they don't.

That's cool. Definitely keep the Avant. I just meant that you won't get the benefit of watching a Blu-ray on a CRT as they a designed for 1080p screens - the bigger the better, too. Put it this way, an Avant has such as good SD image, an upscaled SD DVD, played through the PS3, probably would look as good as a Blu-ray on my BV7-40 MKIII.

You're right. Actually a DVD played on the Avant actually looks much better than a BD played from the PS3. But again, the PS3 has to downscale and send it through a single coaxial cable. Oh well, one day I guess I'll get a new TV, but I love my Avant, and would never replace it with anything other than something as outstanding as itself :)

That is how I read the article also. Decoding can be done either in the BD player or the amplifier/Avant so the real problem is that the Avant does not have the proper connections to receive the decoded signal from the BD player.

The Avant has no multi-channel inputs, and it's built-in decoder can't decode uncompressed multi-channel audio, sadly. The built in decoder is excellent though...

Thanks for the links, I'll try and see if I can understand any of it :)

My PS3 is connected via SPDIF digital out on the PS3 and through a converter to the digital cable that the Avant can handle. The reason that I suspect the SPDIF cable is that my friend once talked about the limited bandwith of that cable and that a HDMI cable can handle a lot more, sadly that doesn't go well with an Avant, and I can't afford a BV9.

The PS3 can definitely handle it. It can play uncompressed PCM and True HD. However, your TV needs to be able to decode the incoming track.

On a sidenote though, and with no disrespect to the Avant (superb TV!), why are you watching Blu-ray's on a CRT?

I was wondering if my BV Avant 32DVD can handle uncompressed surround sound as you'll find it on a Blu-Ray disc??

I was watching a movie last night were I chose this format in the menu, but when the film began the rear speakers were turned off. I then used my PS3 remote to change audiotrack to normal surround and they turned on.

Does this mean that the decoder in the Avant can't handle it or is it the Digital output of the PS3 that can't handle it??

On another note, the Avant is also silly when it comes to the picture. The menu and games of the PS3 is automatically fitted to the screen, but the Blu-Ray movies looks squeezed until I manually choose FORMAT 3 on the Beo4.
