True, Alex; but in order to limit confusion, even with BeoSystem 3 present, the digital connection is made directly between BeoSound 9000 and the BeoLab 5's.

BeoSystem 3 manages and directs, and passes analog signals to the 5's (including Surround sound)...but for listening top CD's the digital stream bypasses the BS-3.

And to nail down the last question in the OP...no special set up is required, just 2 additional cables (the Copper S/PDIF interconnects)

Just to make certain that we're all clear on the point, due to various native languages:

BeoSound 9000 + BeoLab 5 with no other equipment is perfect as is.

Although with all this, you can actually still use the digital input when you have a BeoSystem 3 for just listening to CDs.

Pushing BeoSystem 3 is OK, but the original question was:

How do I set up Beo Lab 5 & Beo Sound 9000? Is there any special set up is required? Without boe system 3 do you think that I can get out the best of beo lab 5.

And the answer is: no BeoSystem 3 is required.

Karsten is more correct, here. If you are planning to use a BeoSystem 3 in the future, you can rest easy.

There is no digital connection to be made from the BS-9000 to the BS-3, ML only. Even in the case where one is using the BeoCenter 2/DVD you run the Coax S/PDIF output to the 5's first and then on to the BS-3.

Attached as Karsten suggests: ML from 9000 to BS-3, Coax daisy-chained from BS-9000 to one BL-5 and then on to the other, and PowerLink MK2 from the BS-3 to the BL-5s. In this setup the BS-3 is only 'in the way' for Radio and A. Aux sources, which are analog in any case. The CD's digital stream is sent directly to the 5's, and the BS-3 still controls volume. Do note, however, that you do not get bass, and treble adjustments while listening to CD's. Everything else plays out as expected.

100% agree with soundproof, I would prefer a setup without a BS3 "in the way" for CD stereo because I don't know what processing the Bs3 does to the incomming signal before it ends at the lab5. Even if you have both, as soundproof has described, no problem at all. Just connect the BS9000 with masterlink to the BS3, the lab5 with powerlink to the bs3 and the digital out of the bs9000 to the lab5.

As my Bs9000 is in a different room, I have a Sony CD player connected to the digital in of the lab 5 bypassing the BS3.

The BeoSystem 3 is not required to get the best from your proposed setup. In fact, one could argue that it would reduce the quality of the sound you can get. That depends upon whether you accept B&O's claim that the sound through Powerlink from the BeoSystem 3 is as good as the sound through coax s/pdif (digital) from your BeoSound 9000 straight into the BeoLab 5s.

The BL5s are unique in that they can accept a coax s/pdif digital signal, and have their own Digital-to-Analog converters. The signal path in the BL5s is such that any signal you feed them will be converted to 24bit/96kHz (either upconverted digital, or analog-to-digital converted), before going to the 32bit/192kHz final DA- stage that converts again (!) before ICEpower amplification. This is actually a good thing -- but also means that if your digital signal has already been converted, say in a BeoSystem 3, to an analog signal for PowerLink, then it will go through an unnecessary new conversion phase in the BeoLab 5s.

Direct: Digital from CD - 16bit/44.1kHz>UP to 24bit/96kHz>Digital-to-Analog 32bit/192kHz>ICEpower
Via BS3: Digital from CD - 16bit/44.1kHz>Digital-to-Analog BeoSystem 3>Analog-to-Digital 24/96kHz, etc.

(Don't know the D-to-A conversion used in BeoSystem 3, but that signal will still be converted to a digital 24/96.)

Which is why I feel pretty confident in stating that you'll be very well served with a BeoSound 9000>BeoLab 5 solution -- when connecting the s/pdif cable to the loudspeakers. You also want to connect the Powerlink cables, but these are then used to control the speakers, volume and balance, etc. The speakers always give priority to the s/pdif signal, if it's detected, which means you'll have B&O control of the speakers, combined with a direct digital signal.
