I will connect them to the Pre Out of an old Braun Atelier R4. I'll connect my Macbook Pro, my PS3 and my TV.

You need to have the speakers settled and placed properly in a near silent room to get a fair demonstration. And it varies heavily on the quality and type of music you put through them! I find the BS1 has an enhanced sound, BL4000's are rather honest and if the content is rubbish, then that is what you will hear.

So what are you going to connect the BL3's to?

I have always found the 4000s very warm and exceptional speakers. In fact, as I type this I am listening to one of our two pairs even though another room in the house has Beolab 9s. We also have a pair of Beolab 1s that are now rears, the 1s previously were the fronts but were replaced with 9s. For music I preferred the 4000s to the 1s as the 1s did seem somewhat harsh and cold.

Have you heard the "new" BL4000s? I haven't, but comments like this (and a few others) make me wonder if their recent change was not for the better.

I was at my local B&O dealer an hour ago and I have to say some things:

1. Beolab 4000 sound awful (cold, like tin box)

2. Beosound 1 sounds good, but the difference to my BL4's is minor

3. I will go for the Beolab 3! Amazing sound and looks, I'll have to earn some money, but they're worth it. I will probably be able to buy them in October. They beat the pants off the 2200€ Dynaudio-system I also listened to.

But the main thing I like about it is, that I can lift it up from the floorstand, take it with me to use it on the terrace (we have power sockets there). And when I have more money next year I can go for a pair of BL4000 or BL3.

I think you've found your answer. Buy what you love...

I really enjoy my BS1. It was my first B&O product, and it's been my trusty office companion for 7 years. I like it as much today as I did when I bought it. Yes, you'll get better sound with BL4000s (I have these) or BL3s (wish I had these), but you can't easily take these out on the terrace, now can you? It's a very nice package. The distortion mentioned above only show up (to my ears) at near maximum volume - similar to other active B&O speakers (BL5 and 9 excepted). I do sometimes wish it had masterlink.

BS4 is a good choice overall, very flexible and around the same price as BS1.

And yes 4000's are frighteningly good, as well as a bargain (second hand). I have BS4 with BL4000 as a stepping stone until i can afford ALT speakers...

BS1 is great for a small quiet room, very good package, but you just can't turn it up, it distorts shockingly

Hey - until I moved house recently, I barely had room for Pentas, so fair enough. If you are interested in older B&O stuff, there are lots of nice pieces of equipment you can pick up for not much money to start a collection A nice 1970s Beolit radio or similar springs to mind.

Someone else I'm sure will be along to advise you on how to best spend your money on new equipment. I've always believed in the 'buy the best you can afford' maxim, so I would lean towards BL3s if you can get them. Why not try getting these used or on a trade in from your dealer?

No, I bought the normal ones, because I always wanted to have a complete system.

For the used systems: I would like to buy one but I don't have the room for Pentas (I'm still at school) and also my dad who pays half doesn't want me to buy used things (don't know why). He says I should go for the BL3's, but the price is high, even if I sell my BL4's and get a 10-15% discount.

If my budget was limited, I'd go for the BS1. BS4 (which I own), is decent, but I'm not a big fan of all the cabling that's loose at the back, particularly when using it with DAB.

I love the ´"if my budget was limited" bit referring to anything up to €2200!

I also suggest adding a Beosound4 + BL4000s.

You will eventually want to buy BL3s or higher for technical/audio/ego reasons but the 4000s are awfully close to the BL3s and are equally impressive to look at visually. They would make excellent Link room speakers down the road if you ever decided to upgrade. The biggest advantage I see with the 4000s is that if you decided to build a cost effective surround system they would be extremely versatile, flexible and beautiful. Once I added my BL3s to the Surround system I found that I really needed to stick with other Acoustic Lens speakers for them all to match well. This meant an much higher per component cost.
