Just a quick post to pass on my gratitude to all posters who offered their assitance with this. Visited nobby this morning and he fixed the problem in a flash - even supplied a nice cup of tea, too!

Thanks very much for your speedy and knowedgeable replies! I'm in SW London and the MX was bought from Ronald James of Coulsdon. I'm happy to go back there and enquire about them doing the repair unless you'd advise otherwise for whatever reason?

A very warm welcome to Beoworld..

Based on your "Problem Statement" it is clear there is lack of line driver to the horizontal scan coils, but the vertical drive is good.

Also, the fact you can see a vertical line means that the EHT (Extra High Tension) voltage from the LOPT (Line Output Transformer) to the tube anode is working fine.

The likely causes include:-

Short circuit secondary winding on the line Output transformer which drives the scan coils
The scan coils themselves (less likely)
Associated components connected to this section of the LOPT

In my view a good TV repair shop would have it fixed in no time, subject to availability of teh needed spare.

I am not expert, but that sounds like a component failure rather than the tube. I wouldn't give up yet! Where are you based? Someone may be able to help.

Hello all

My beloved MX4000 has finally gone 'on the blink' as we say here in the UK . Picture is reduced to a thin (5-8mm) vertical line in the centre of the screen. Audio is fine. Is this the end of a beautiful relationship?
