The wattage drawn by the AVANT with VCR is actually 185 watts at 240 volts.

The other member (Link previously provided by Peter) with the same issue purchased a 300 watt transformer because the AVANT does not have a large tolerence on mains voltage and if you purchase a transformer just above the actual current drawn it is likely to saturate and so not provide voltage within the tolerence range. Also remember that you are running at 110 volts from your normal sockets, so the current is higher, but is not double.

Therefore I suggest you purchase at least a 300 watt transformer.

What wattage of step up transformer will ensure the TV works at peak performance? I heard that even though the TV says "110w", I should get something much higher since the power surges when the TV is first turned on.

There is no switch, you will definitely need a transformer.

is there a voltage switch on these units? i can't seem to find one and the eBay seller seemed to think there was a switch, then all i would need is an adapter for the plug and i wouldnt have to worry about a step-up transformer.

seems too easy...

Great thread! Thanks for the link to that. I will be using an external cable box/DVD Player so I have no problem with decoding.

However, I'm confused re: the transformer solution though. The poster bought a step up/step down convert for 300 watts and it didn't work, however he then bought a 250w model and it worked properly? Here are the details from my set:

Beovision 32 VCR

220-240v ~50/60Hz

Power Consumption: 110w

That is a UK plug so you have a 230V model. You therefore need a step up transformer capable of increasing the voltage to 230V. It needs to be a very heavy duty one! There has been a thread about this before - it was about a DVD Avant but same basic idea - look here!

Hello,

I just picked up a used Avant to complement my Beosound. My Beosound is North American spec, but the Avant has the UK plug.

What adapter/voltage converter do I need so I can use the TV safely without blowing up my house? lol. I've attached a photo of the plug in question. Also - how do I connect an external cable box or DVD player? Will an SCART adapter work?
