    Too good to last forever.

I use both XP Media Centre with a B&O M-L system at home, and a Mac Book Pro for imagery and graphics at work.

The following may not be known to everyone using Mac:

" Just when you thought it was safe to go surfing again, Mac AV vendor Intego is reporting an OS X-specific Trojan horse showing up on some sites and forums. The bit of nasty, which Intego is calling OSX.RSPlug.A and other sources refer to as DNSchanger or Ultracodec/Zlob

The article goes on to indicate false-flag rerouting, and rerouting to Potemkim sites which then steal passwords and other private information.

I hope this information will help some members to avoid potential expensive Mac problems.

AFAIK these so called viruses try and install a video codec that's unknown by the user - they ask for an admin password and can mess stuff up

but they can't affect root ( the main system ) and you'd have to be daft / very drunk to just install any old thing on your mac in the first place

tip 1. when surfing porn - turn off java and then you won't get silly problems like this in the first place

Re: Too good to last forever.

Trojans and viruses are completely different. A trojan is just a piece of software which doesn't do what it says on the tin. You install it thinking it's going to install a codec etc... when in fact it just deletes files. I believe there are others out there for Macs, but it's not a 'vulnerability', it's just a disaster waiting to happen to incredibly stupid people...

Viruses are different however, and there has only ever been one self-spreading one for OS X, which was still a kind of trojan in part.

There have never been any 'effective' viruses/trojans for OS X, because of the two or three that have come into existence, they've all been pretty badly designed and require a lot of 'help' from the user to get them working (such as actually going through an install process).

Re: Too good to last forever.

In the near future, i (unfortunately have to) install Office for Mac,
to open and work with Powerpoint, Word, Excel.
The email/project-software that comes with Office for Mac is called Entourage.
So that means Windows-software on my Mac, which, from what i've heard, a potential security issue.
As i have have always used Norton Antivirus on my Windows computers,
i thought it would be wise to buy Norton Antivirus for Mac,
which i bought from the Apple Store.
I have not yet installed the software, as i would like to know what you think about this.
Is it wise to install antivirus, because i will receive email in a Windows/program (Entourage) ?

    Thanks Smile

It will slow things down considerably, and generally not be much help.

You are of course, aware that there are alternatives to Microsoft Office which still support the same files. iWork has the ability to open and save Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents (although it's not obvious), and there is of course NeoOffice (although this isn't very good).

I don´t know, i don´t have much experience with Apple products.
Will it make a difference regarding security issues ?

I´ve taken a quick look at iWork,
seems to offer similar features that i need.

Regarding antivirus, is it not necessary to install it, because of email ?

Anti Virus software for Mac is a waste of money. Forget about it. It will cause far more problems than it will ever cure (if it will cure anything at all). Leave it all to Apple.

    Thanks,

Leaving it to Apple, that means just check for updates frequently ?

You don't need to check for updates frequently, your Mac will tell you when there are updates available. Smile
