    Trade brandnew combo BL8002/BL2 for BL9 ?

    Hi guys,

after a phone call with a B&O second life dealer, I`m asking myself?

Should (and would you) trade my (your) combo BL8002/BL2, bought end of 2010 for a pair of BL 9?

I have taken a close look at my leisure activities with my B&O entertainment electronics. I must admit that I found the sound of a subwoofer (lower frequencies) in the meanwhile terrific. But I also have to admit, this leads to the reproduction of music to an "unnatural" sound, sometimes (I was told from wife and friends to reduce intensity of the subwoofer).

Rooms size is 22 m2. Listening time approx. 3-4 hours each day. Approx. 1-2 hours music (BS4 via master link to BV8 40, loudspeaker BL8002/BL2 plugged in DSS via BV8 40). Primary radio and MP3, little CD. 1-2 hours/day TV (news, reports, sometimes action movies).

After what I have heard (gave the BL9 a try at the B&O dealer) and read regarding the BL9, I can say the following in comparison to my BL8002/BL2 combo.

BL9 is a powerful, flawless, voluminous speaker and thanks to ALT gratitude a stereo quality in the whole room. Impressive bass for speakers of its size (of cause could not compete with combo of subwoofer combo BL2 regarding lower bass volume)

If I´d say goodbye to the combo BL8002/BL2, I´ll receive a detailed sound reproduction independently of seat position (thanks of ALT). I will "loose" my beloved deep sound (I wound not buy a subwoofer in the future to compensate the effect because of space/money).

I could trade the BL8002/BL for a pair of BL9 from the showroom (built 2010) and have to pay round € 300, a brand-new pair for € 700, or a used pair from 2008 and receive € 300.

So the 1 million dollar question again is: Would you trade your BL8002/BL2 combo for a pair of BL9???

Style wise no, sound wise yes.

So yes I would probably do it, if I had bought the BL 8000 purely for the looks (best looking B&O speaker if you ask me) I wouldn't change them, but soundwise the BL9 are much better.

I like the design of the BL9 too.

No. I would hang on and get a pair of BL5s. A second hand pair would be fine. That way you will have the best of both worlds - bass that you clearly value and much better sound. The BL5 is one of the few speakers which really are a step above most others. The BL9 is good, and better than what you have - but not that much better. I think what you plan will still be a compromise - the BL5 is never a compromise.

    Doctor,

the BL5 is miles above my limit. Even a second life pair always sells for €11-12k. They are of cause every penny worth.

And my room size is only 22 m2.

Soundwise the Beolab 9 is an improvement over the Beolab 8002 Beolab 2 combo. But like Doctor I would go for a second hand pair of Beolab 5's as well. I've seen them for less then € 11k.

Agree with above. Hold out, save your money and get the lab 5s. I have them and will never look back. I don't necessarily think your room is too small and the 5s adjust and adapt their output anyway.

IMO, musically you won't miss any low-end. I've heard BeoLab 9s go extremely deep, and I have been quite vocal about my opinion on the BeoLab 2 as a musical subwoofer in the past! BeoLab 9s would IMO be quite a significant step up, but agree with others that if you can, save up for BeoLab 5s - they're really quite extraordinary even when compared to the BeoLab 9!

I do think the BeoLab 9s have their flaws - the mid/bass driver is IMO underpowered and doesn't seem to quite project properly, the soundstage lacks height for obvious reasons, they do start to shriek fairly quickly when you turn them up, and the bass can get a little bloated when listening at elevated volumes too. Not really major issues, but that's one of the reasons you pay double the amount for a pair of BeoLab 5s!

Nonetheless, the BeoLab 9 is an absolutely excellent speaker, and would easily outperform your current setup IMHO!

Maybe you should have gone for the beolab 11 sub instead of the beolab 2?

    Expoman,

no the BL11 was/is to weak for me. PV1 from B&W instead of BL2 yes, but BL11 instead of BL2 in combination with BL8002 no way.

Re: Trade brandnew combo BL8002/BL2 for BL9 ?

Where do you have the BL2 positioned in your room? Can you play with the placement? If it's in a corner, it will be effectively radiating into 1/2 Pi space, which means alot of boundary reinforcement and lumpy frequency response higher up in the potential passband of the subwoofer.

I find most people crossover their sub at way too high of a frequency, and/or have the volume up too much relative to the mains.

I personally like corner loading a sub, but it's trickier to get right. If you don't have measuring equipment, which most of us don't, start by verifying your sub is in absolute phase with your mains, and lowering the crossover point to 40 or 50Hz - ish. Play some low frequency test tones (20Hz - 100Hz, for instance). Your goal is to get as seemless a response as you possibly can across this frequency range. You may have to play with the phase control of the sub (assuming BL2 has one) to get decent integration.

A subwoofer is not a plug-it-in-and-forget-it affair. It takes much time and fine-tuning to set-up properly. Most people don't, or just don't know how.

I vote to keep the set-up you have. Much cooler looking and probably better suited to your taste in sound quality, if the time is taken to set it up right.

P.S. - If you follow my advice, do your listening at high volumes. Set up at low volumes, there is always the tendency to turn the sub level up too high, and then it sounds boomy and sloppy when listening at higher volumes.

Have you tried all the settings on the bl2 ? Setting 1 works for me in my tv room, setting 2 works great for me with my 8000s in my other room. Also do try the corner/wall/open option.

    Jon, Valve1,

BL2 setup is "2" for BL8000 (3 for BL1 is too much) and "free standing" (corner and wall are not enough power). BL2 and BL8002 are plugged into the DSS of the BV8-40. Bass and subwoofer are both 50% on the DSS.

Re: Trade brandnew combo BL8002/BL2 for BL9 ?

Well, like I said, you're going to have to play with things to get them fine-tuned. I can't see the rest of your room, but the subwoofer might be placed in a non-optimal location. The closer to square your room is, the more peaks and dips in the response it will have.

I'm not too familiar with the Beolab 2 - I don't know whether it has traditional settings for adjustment of phase, gain, and crossover frequency. If it does, crossing over lower is usually better, and phase will vary with placement. Gain you should fine-tune and set while at a loud listening level. I know the wall/free/corner settings are there to compensate for boundary reinforcement - progressively cutting the bass output as you move the speaker closer to the corner.

I'd keep the combo you have over the BL9's - you just need to play with things to get a better, more integrated sound from them.

Well personally i believe the BL8000 and BL2 is now officially beginning to look outdated and is no longer ahead of the rest, design wise, which is perfectly fine, they've had a good run - 18 years??

I can't believe you chose to purchase new BL8000's with BL2 when you could have had the BL9 for the same money, BL9 is a fantastic speaker, so much simpler too! Have it in any colour you want with the help of a fabric trimmer.

I think it will be hard for the Beolab 8000/2 to EVER look outdated. Definitely a matter of personal taste I guess. I'll venture to say that the BL8000/2 will age far better than the love-it or hate-it looks of the robot speakers...I mean ALT-type speakers! ;)

My 2 auditions of the BL9 were not to my liking, for music or movies. They needed more mid range which for me made them tiring to listen to.

Let your ears be the judge.

What about keeping the BL2 and trading in the BL8002 for BL3? Then you have ALT and very well speakers and still the Bassboom you like from your BL2. The best from both worlds.

I do have the BL3 in a far from optimal position but like them a lot. I would guess even your wife likes the smaller speakers more.

Re: Trade brandnew combo BL8002/BL2 for BL9 ?

    Heribert,

before I went for the BL2 I bought the BL8002 instead of the BL3 because I liked the "warm" sound and of cause the "blink blink" of the polished metal of the BL8002.
In comparison BL3 to BL8002 (with or without subwoofer) I would not rate the BL3 over the BL8002, so I do not think it would be an improvement. But I could go for a used pair of BL3 as rear speakers, but I`m sure my wife would kill me because of the cables going round the room on the slabs.

Just gave a local dealer a phone call (I did not buy B&O products from him yet). He will pass me a pair of Bl9 for 1-2 days, so I`m able to judge my combo against the BL9.

Absolutely you should take the trade. . .

I have them both. . .no comparison

I'm ready for something new that I actually want to buy!

kind of off-topic, but is it your local B&O store that is offering the trade-in opportunity?  they woudl never allow something like that here as I have asked all of the stores around me.  what do they end up doing with the trade-ins?  are they sold used?  just curious... thanks.

I must confess that I would be unable to borrow a pair of Beolab 9s from a dealer just so I could try them before buying a second hand pair from elsewhere on purely ethical grounds. This will cost the dealer a fair amount with no hope of gain. Or do you mean to get the Beolab 9s from him?

Go for the BL9's. Simply the best loadspeaker for the money IMO. BL5 is another category of course, so is its price.

Re: Trade brandnew combo BL8002/BL2 for BL9 ?

The second life dealer will "trade" the BL8002 + BL2 for the BL9, but is of cause not able to pass me the BL9 for a weekend. He just gave me a call. He only will collect my speakers and put the 1 year old BL9 on the corner place.

Just stopped at the local B&O dealer. He is also interested in the deal. He will buy my speakers too and will sell me a brand new pair of BL9. I will have the possiblity to listen to the BL9 from the 25th to 28th of Febr.. In the past I did not have any problems regarding trading my used B&O stuff.

So I´m able to judge my current setup BL8002/BL2 against BL9. I just admired the red BL9 at the B&O shop. I`m looking forward to the test. I think the question would not be BL8002/Bl2 vs BL9. The million dollar question would be red BL9 vs black BL9.
