New member with non working 4002

    Hi all,

I haven't been on the forum much, as I had taken my 4002 to the local electronics repair shop for repair. The shop owner, who was some what of a family friend, said he could get it working again for me. After having it for over a year, and not working on it, I went and got it back. Now I'm needing to know where I can send it for a 'professional' repair. I live in the USA, out West.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I love my old LPs and am really anxious to be able to play them on my 4002.

I should add that when I bought it (off ebay) and after reading this forum and doing some of the suggested clean/lube work, it worked fine for a couple of days. Then suddenly quit working at all. Doesn't even seem to power on though the lights come on.

    Thanks

Just call your local B&O dealer - you can view the list at bangolufsen.com.  They'll refer you to the local authorized repair center.

    Or maybe Atlantic Systems?

    Thanks for your help.

The two options I would recommend would either be http://www.atlantic-systems.com or Dillen, who is located in Denmark. Your local B&O dealer might also know a reliable local repair shop.

Re: New member with non working 4002

on my 4002, ive had to lube it several times for different reasons. ive had it to where id push start and youd see the lights come on and the platter would spin, but the tone arm wouldnt travel, therefore it wouldnt turn on. after taking it apart, i tried to get rid of some the crusty old lube and put some new lube on it. i used wd40, but that only lasted so long so i guess you need to make sure you are using more of a greasy lube

if you look at the service manual, its pretty easy to see how to take the turntable apart so that you can get to some of the more hidden parts

I find that using isapropanol is about the best for removing dried up grease. Try not to use WD40, I think it is acidic and not the best for your B&O.

That's the problem with WD40, it is only a "quick fix" and tends to exacerbate the problem of gunk build up as it tends to attract dust. It is also slightly acidic which isn't good in the long run. There is a silicon spray equivalent on the market which is far better but the best over all option is a complete degrease and relube with silicon grease.

A local B&O dealer would definitely be best as these turntables do not travel well.

If your Denver dealer is not willing to work on your 4002, Bill Rapp is excellent and I believe that he is located in St. Louis. You can contact Bill at *email address removed by a Beoworld moderator to prevent spam, contact Dillen for the mentioned email address*.

Should you need to ship your 4002 the platter MUST be removed and packed separately, the arms secured, and double box your turntable. If you fail to double box it, I very much doubt it will arrive in one piece…. My 2 eBay purchases didn’t, but the 4004 that was double-boxed survived.

    Good luck!

My local audio dealer recommended sewing machine oil which I used on my Beogram 4002. Seemed to work well, but now after all this talk about silicon grease I wonder if I have made the wrong choice.

    What do you think?

Re: New member with non working 4002

Sorry about providing an email address, I didn’t know that we were not supposed to do this. Live and learn.

When I was having a terrible time trying to get my Beogram 8000 up and running, Bill Rapp was beyond helpful.

Then when I couldn’t find parts anywhere for my shattered (literally) Beocord 8004, Bill provided a new glass panel and an entire idler arm assembly which restored my Beocord to perfection.

I was told that Mr. Rapp is (or was) the Bang & Olufsen representative for North America.  I do not know this for a fact, however Mr. Rapp does restore Bang & Olufsen equipment to a very high level and sells the finished products  on eBay.

Sewing machine oil is just fine for the smaller targets, like pivots, axles, etc. It is however so thin that it won't stay very long in places where capillary effect doesn't keep it sucked in. For bigger stuff, like slide rails, I've used white lithium grease which you can get in any auto parts store (in tubes, not the spray can stuff).

When/if hunting for silicone grease, never confuse it with SILICON paste, which is used between components and heat sinks. That will be first sticky and then hard in no time at all!

Incidentally, the shop manuals often list the "correct" lubricants, but I don't suppose anyone wants to start playing with "Rocol MTS 1000, diluted to oily viscosity with ESSO NUTO H 44" Stick out tongue (but the lubricant listed for many parts in BG4002-6000, "Castrol everyman oil", is quite accessible...)

Mika, thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

Hey Barto, just for good memories’ sake, I used to own two stores in Redmond and Bellevue called Auto Gear. Ancient history now, but it was fun.

OK, so I will add my voice to Barto in Seattle, where can I find silicon grease on Vancouver Island?

Re: New member with non working 4002

I actually just found a place thats a liscenesed B&O reapair shop that also works on vintage stuff. I just took my BM 2400 to get the capacitors replaced and was talking to the guy there that works on the older stuff. I told him how i have some other old B&O items that i may bring in and how the tone arm sticking on my 4002 and i asked him if there was some grease or oil i could buy. He said they dont really sell any but he got a mini zip lock bag and squeezed a little out for me for no charge Cool. the place is called Precision Audio & Video and they are located in the U district in seattle. they were really helpful and seemed knowledgeable. I know thats a ways away for you but if you need service, it would probably be better to drive there as opposed to boxing up your unit and shipping it which could potentially damage it more. To answer your question: no, i dont know where to find silicon grease on Vancouver Island. when i pick up my beomaster, ill ask what type of grease they use.

Ah, the U District, I know it well, as my better half attended UW.

I can’t say that I remember Precision Audio & Video, but perhaps the next time I am in Seattle I will check it out. At least the U District I can find my way around. Good grief Seattle and Bellevue have changed!
