I have some of these really great headphones, but the measly cable has an intermittent connection (break) right near the jack. Before I attempt to repair, can anyone tell me what the cable is like inside, and suggest a good replacement plug that is a good quality and fit for the cable?

The A8's are covered by a 3 year exchange warranty.  Any dealer can perform the swap.  If the A8's are over 3 years old, or might have suffered 'abuse' then, in the US, any B&O dealer can exchange them for $60 plus tax, and shipping (as applicable), something similar ought to be in effect elsewhere in the world.

The A8s were a gift (UK), under 3yrs old and I have all the packing, but sadly no receipt so no proof of purchase. I will contact a dealer anyway, to see if they are prepared to help me out. Fingers crossed!

The only abuse they suffered is being loved so much they were used daily :-) [and I miss them a lot.] I treated them very carefully, being sure not to bend the wires near the jack plug or kink them, but as with many headphones of this ilk the supplied wires are insubstantial so it was kind of inevitable they would go with daily use.

I think most of the dealers are pretty good about exchanging A8s. If you are honest and friendly, they will probably do it without thinking twice, even if no proof of purchase.

In the UK the warranty is 2 years, the fault you're describing is unlikely to be covered but a new cable is about £20.  Whether your dealer charges anything for labour to do the repair I couldn't say.
