Not an easy question! I use Sky+ and it works like a dream in both the main room and link rooms.

I would consider a recordable DVD/HDD player - Philips and Panasonic seem to keep the same codes and will work via a DVD controller. My Panasonic will no doubt have been replaced but has a digital tuner as well as DVD recorder and HDD and works moderately well with  the DVD controller. Nothing like as well as Sky + though which could be part of the system when used with my Avant DVD. I am not a fan of the Sky empire, but the technology is just brilliant. If it had a DVD recorder built in to archive the odd programme I want to keep, it would be perfect. As it is, I use a V8000 - about 5 times in the last 3 years!!

The Topfield TF5800 is a pretty good box, 2 sizes of harddrive available and with a SW update to your avant, will work a treat.

The Topfield 7000 series seem to work as well, with a couple of minor issues. Expensive option though.

    Re: Digital PVR which one?

I am very happy with my new Topfield 5800 (mind you, I am not so sure that my wife is - she does not interface well with any electronic equipment).

However, I have had a new software chip in my Avant100, and am rather flummoxed by the keystroke combinations needed on the BEO4 to copy the Topfield remote commands. Is there anyone who can help with a plain guide?

I think SKY+ is near perfect. Nothing comes close.
