Keith Saunders: Beolab,
Perhaps you could provide a translation for the rest of us.
It is clear that the product manager likes to use a electric screw driver to remove the back panel to show the inside, but what is he actually telling us...
Okey! I try to translate in a short sentence.
When he demount the LCD panel it´s only the black thin plastic panel that is the LCD panel. The rest of the plastic panels behind are just to bend the back light in a smooth way. Every manufacture la-borates with the white/transparent panels to reach a good middle way in contrast and brightness. The LCD are much, much cheaper to produce than plasma, so the LCD manufactures have a bigger income than the plasma manufactures.
He also talks about the developing of the motherboard in both LCD and plasma displays have been more efficient and more compact in the design. And the assembling/mounting-cost´s have decrease in price because of the more compact chips with on-board connections on the motherboards instead of separate connections.
And the plasma displays use to have one heavy glass panel in front of the plasma display with inbuilt UV- contrast filter. And the plasma display are made of two glass panels and inside them are the fosfor gas. It´s not so much gas inside a plasma, no more than a cigarette lighter. And he shows the gas tap in the upper corner where they insert the gas.
In the new plasma´s they have get rid of the front glass panel and have instead glued the UV-contrast filter on the plasma glass panel.
Because of the new method the plasma have a better heat ventilation because the third glass use to keep the heat inside the plasma. And the result of this is cheaper producing cost´s, lighter TV:s , doesn't need as many fans for the ventilation and the power supply decrease dramatically.
So the old plasmas were much more expensive to built because of the glass filters and the more robust aluminum Chassie.
The plasma chassi doesn't have a steel frame as the LCD and the "chassis" motherboard and trafo are all mounted on the plasma glass panel. The LCD have a thin steel frame and the rest of the chassie are made of plastic.
The Plasma panel uses 220v to light up the display and LCD just need 12v to lighten up.
As you can see that the plasma just light up where it is signal no where else on the display= Higher contrast ratio. The LCD lights up the hole display at ones.= worse contrast ratio.
The LCD technology have also different sorts of back light. One back light scans/rolling up to down in the same speed as the screen refresh rate. And another have adaptive backlight how can adjust the light in different parts of the display. = Higher contrast.
And Samsung and JVC have the adaptive backlight with 100 LED lights. And JVC with 900 LED RGB lights. This technology are capable of a contras ratio up to 150.000:1 in contrast ratio. So the blacks are pitch black because the adaptive backlight can reduce or turn the LED´s of
And he says that the backlight are more important than the panel.
A fast translation!
