Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
I got this unit last night and was wondering how to connect my center
speaker a beolab 4000
Please use the link below to have a look at the rear panel
http://www.onkyousa.com/zoom.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-NR708#
I have B&O pasives connected to front and rear but
could not figure out where should i connect the beolab for center. There
was one output in pre-amp for center which did not trigger my beolab
4000. Any input or your connection panel photo would be great.
I may need a specific cable to trigeer the beolab?
Thanks All

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
Use preamp center on Onkyo and line RCA on BL, shift BL R/L/Line to line, I have my BL 8000s front connected this way and no probs.
The center speaker has to be activated in the amp speaker config or with the microphone (Audyssay setup)

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
The pre-amp center is a single "green" female. Do I need a digital co-axial cable for this?
What do you mean by "shift BL R/L/Line to line"
Will the beolab get activated automatically?
Thanks

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
In the BL 4000 where you connect the cables there is a small switch, 3 positions, Right, Left and Line. the connection panel on the BL 4000 has 3 connections, 2, 8 pin din and 1 RCA line in.
for the preamp connection you will need a speaker cable with 2 male RCA plugs, one end to amp and the other end to line in on BL 4000

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
Got it. So all I need would be a single cable with two ends as males. One end will be into the BL 4000 line in and the onkyo "green" pre-out

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
The RCA plug is for a 2 string cable for speaker connection, its the same cable as used for passive speakers, the inner pin on the RCA is the signal (+), and the outer "ring" is the ground (negative), any electronic or speaker shop will have these in different length. Radio schack or something like that.
To get used to your new equipment read the manual, play with the different options, the Onkyo is not simple but its a good amp with a lot of options.
If you want to know more about speakers, speaker cables and connections and how to, Wiki it or google it.
For Onkyo there is a good one here

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
Thanks for your help.
I got the answeres I was looking for. I got few of these and they should work for the pre-outs from Onkyo to Line IN of any B&O active speakers.
Thanks

Well IMO its overkill, these will do just fine and you wont hear any difference, tell me how it worked out, and your speaker setup.

I had some spare cables at home and tested the system with it. I am not really excited so far with the output. Below are some observations so far.
1. The volume seems to be low and have to increase beyond 50 units to see any good listening sound. I have RL 6000 passives as front, BL 4000 as center, Cona as sub looped through with the front. S45-2 as rear.
2. Output with BS1 seems louder. Missing the subwoofer "oomph". Is it because I have a passive Cona as sub. May need to replace Cona. If so what would be a good replacement. If I use a MCL2P with Cona will it make any difference
3. Have not yet done the Audyssy setup. Will it make any difference?
4. Ofcourse there are more options on surround sound and tons of connection inputs and outputs. Honestly was hoping for more perfromance after reading so much about the Onkyo TX-NR 708 and its capabilities as AV receiver and amplifier
5. Very happy with the network options with capabilities to play Internet Radio, Server, USB drives audi files
6. Hoping improve in performance with some changes to settings. Other Onkyo users chime in please.
Thanks

Answers to some of your questions:
1) 50 units is about right. Units are all relative though. Who cares if they call it "50" or "1000" or "500" ? You may "expect" that 50 units would be loud but does that really mean anything?
2) Your cona is not a proper sub for surround. Sell it, you can get a good amount of $$$ for it, and get a real subwoofer. Sorry cona fans...but it's true. It also goes only down to 40 Hz....I have a B&W ASW850 sub, goes down to 18hz, 1000 watts, and have to throttle it way down in the Audessy setup. Get a real powered sub....period. Doesn't have to be top of the line. A $200 sub will blow the cona away.
3) Yes, Audessey will make a HUGE difference, but don't bother until you have a real sub. Not sure how you are even doing a proper setup with the cona as the receiver won't support a passive sub.
4) Your hopes are only limited by your current setup. Get a proper sub, set up Audessey (takes all of 15min) and you will be a happy man.

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
For arround $200 which one will be a good sub. I dont mind getting a used one too.
You make a good point... I am not sure now if the Audessy will even recognize cona as sub in the setup. In my Onkyo setting I am indicating that there is no seperate subwoofer...the cona is looped through the front speakers

Check out Audiogon.com for great used subs. Can't give you specific examples you will need to check out reviews, etc in that price range. Would definitely go used.
Velodyne is a well-known brand and has a whole range of priced subs.

Re: Center Channel Connection from Onkyo to Beolab 4000
Only active subs can be used, for your sound level, do the audyssey, then. the source you want to play, home, audio, dynamic EQ on, dynamic volume light, music optimizer on or of.
this way you will get the normal listening level to some 30-35, I run with bass and treble on +10 dcb, and get a good bass on my BL8000, your BL 6000 will be a little less.
