    Beovox s120 - Bad midrange needs replacement

    I have a pair of s120s and they are amazing, but I'm currently getting heavy distortion from the midrange driver in one of them. I'm guessing it needs to be replaced all together but I'm open to other options. I believe it is a SEAS H226. Where can I find a compatible driver? I'm looking at this one currently and may replace the one in the other speaker just to have them match: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-857 . Thanks!

    It could be a problem with the crossover filter too. The capacitors dry out with age.
    A capacitor kit exists for this model and I may be able to help you to a good
    used original midrange driver.

    I actually found a speaker with a polydome 3" in it that I could have bought today for $20 but the guy said it could be the crossover as well. Thing is the tweeter and woofer are just fine. And when I press the "condom" down tight over the dome the distortion disapears. I was going to buy your light kit for my BM 2400 soon, so a cap kit would be great too if that really is the problem. I'm going to direct test the driver with some wires and see if its still distorted.

    If you are going into both cabinets anyways, you can also swap the midranges and see if
    the problem moves to the other speaker.

    I'm sure the drivers and crossover elements are different in your S120s, but I had the same problem with my S45-2s:  distortion in one midrange only, and only at listening levels louder than typical background listening levels.

    Martin supplied me with capacitors and a new midrange, and in the end, it was the crossover that was the cause.  Three months later or so, I am using my original midrange and all is well.

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

    Yes, this is pretty much my problem, certain volumes and frequencies. Certain songs do it. The oddest thing is the pressing of the rubber cone cover fixing it. That's why I always assumed it was the driver.

    Dillen, if the driver is fine I won't bother opening the other cabinet. I'm just going to touch raw wire direct from the amp to the driver leads and listen for some distortion. if nothing its obviously the crossover.

    Don't feed the midrange driver directly from the amplifier.
    Put a bipolar capacitor (maybe 22uF or so) in series or you will destroy the midrange.
    Very hard really, to hear anything this way anyways.
