    Remote control for BM1900

    Hi,

I have long known that my BM1900 was not built for remote control and accepted the fact that I should have purchased a BM2400 if I wanted to use a remote.  I later acquired a BM2400 and a 2400-2 but both were missing their remotes.  Last week, I finally got my first remote control module and have spent some time getting it to work properly.  I then noticed for the first time that the BM1900 also appears to have all of the electronics built in, ready for remote control.  All that seems to be missing is the microphone receiver.  So my question is; if I install the microphone, will the remote control work, or have I missed some other important aspect of the BM1900?  It does seem to be the simplest of upgrades and hardly justifies B&O having two separate models for sale at the same time.  I will be interested in any comments that the members have.

    Regards

    Geoff

Fascinating! I am quite surprised by this though I know that some other items were de-specced simply by missing out wires - datalink in some Beograms comes to mind. None the less, this does seem perverse! As you have all the bits, I suggest you try and let us know what happens! I know the later 2300 had the cut out for the microphone which was not fitted and the 7 pin DIN socket for the record player which had no function!

How you did sort the battery out for the remote?

Also neither of my 2400 remotes seem to work with either of my 2400 systems, although I suspect that its the fact that I can't seem to get any sort of battery to work.

Or neither of the remotes work as they don't seem to make any sound! :-(

    Re: Remote control for BM1900

    Hi Large48

At the moment I am using a 14V power supply connected directly to the remote battery terminals while the plastic cover is off.  This will get me through the testing phase while I determined if the remote and the receivers are able to work properly.  As Peter has mentioned, 15V compatable batteries are still available but from what I have seen, they are very expensive - around $30 here in Australia.  I didn't think that it was worth getting one at least until I was certain that everything worked OK.  In any case, it is a pretty lean remote and doesn't even offer access to the Tape channel which is the one that I use most.  It is fun playing around with an ultrasonic remote for the first time but I can imagine that in a month or so, this remote will be relegated to my B&O museum.

I will let you know how my progress on the BM1900 works out.

    regards

    Geoff

The board on the BM1900 has the markings where the components for the remote should go (think it even says remote) but it doesn't have any of the components actually soldered in. So it is more difficult then that as you would have to buy all the components and solder them on plus I'm not sure it will work anyway because that part of the board may not be linked to anything. I have never heard of anyone being doing this successfully. I would just buy the battery for the 2400 control module.

    Hi BenSA

I think that you have hit the nail squarely on the head.  I have never actually seen the component side of the 1900 board in that area because I have never had a reason to take off the front control panel.  Now that I have taken a closer look at the solder side of the 1900 and 2400, the boards appear to be similar but the 1900 has a mass of "dummy" solderings.  You are right that there probably aren't any components installed on the other side.

Given that situation, I certainly won't be bothering to install a remote facility on the 1900 but it just sounded a good idea at the time.  Thanks very much for your concise observation.  Now I will have to find another project!

    Best Regards

PS - I hope that the flexible connection on your BM5000 is still working OK Yes - thumbs up

    Hi Geoff

I've got a BM2400-2 open on my lab table right now, in for a complete restoration, so I took a look at what you're trying to do. Adding the missing components would be straightforward, except for the coils - no idea where to source those, except from a junker.

And then once you've installed the parts, you'd have to align the transmit/receive frequencies up. No small matter, if frequency counters and o'scopes are not part of your everyday equipment.

So, not a project I'd tackle, unless the customer was paying a lot of money, for what is essentially experimental work.

    Hey Geoff

Glad I could shed some light on the subject. Connection on my BM5000 is still 100% after the repair!! Smile

    Thanks
