    CD50 Problem - Agggh!

Hope someone can help. Tried to load a CD in my CD50 tonight and it wouldn't play. Had it the right (wrong!) way up, but it sounds as if the CD tray motor won't shut off when the flap is closed. The tray keeps opening and closing, and is now not closing the flap without assistance. Is there a quick fix here (belts, grease, etc.) or does it need to go for repair???

    Thanks in advance!

I believe that the flap is belt operated and that Dillen sells spares if that is indeed the problem. Maybe worth a peek inside to "see what you can see" first though.

Could be the belt slipping, could also be the mechanics in need of lubrication, finally one of the contacts in the tray mech could have a lose wire or oxidated contacts.

    Thanks Martin & Puncher

Got it open. Seems like one of the contacts at the back of the tray that should engage the CD mech isn't switching. I think it is because the gearing needs lubricating, as I can make the gears make the final fraction of a turn using a pen. What should I use to lubricate the mech?

Often it's enough to just clean off the dried remains of the old lubricants along with the dust and dirt it has collected and let it run dry.

You can add a little silicon grease if you like.

Might try that - Martin, do you stock a replacement belt for the mechanism? Should really replace it whilst I'm in there :)

    AGGGHH! >:(

So today the new belt arrived for my CD50 from Martin, and after much fiddling I got the belt on and the tray mech greased and adjusted so that the tray and flap open/shut smoothly. Now the problem is that the CD player won't recognise whether there's a CD in the tray, regardless of whether there's one there or not. Prior to moving the CD mech to fit the new belt it was working, so I can only assume I've 'damaged' something whilst I had the mech out of the way. Is there some easy electromechanical thing I can check that I might have overlooked, or does this need some expert help???

    Thanks in advance.

Look in from the left side and check if the laser lens moves up and down in search for a CD (focus point).

Check that no wires have broken off the switches in the bottom of the mech.

Check that all plugs and connectors are mounted.

Check for bad solders in the power supply area, especially around the voltage regulators at the rear.

I will do as you suggest when I have some time after work tomorrow. From memory I think that the lens didn't move up and down once the mech was re-mounted.

I suppose you had the mechanisms apart. Check that the switch is activated to indicate when the drawer is fully closed.

If you press play with a CD inserted, is it being ejected ?

I'm not with the unit now, but from memory the switch was activated. It's the one activated from the top of the big cam, pushing the metal 'spike' backwards, isn't it?

When pressing play with a CD inserted, the CD doesn't spin, and is ejected, then the process repeats itself.

BTW, Andy - I did wonder whether that was the problem, and though I can clearly see which way the laser points, I still inverted the CD 'just in case' I was being a bit dense!

    Hi John

If you don't crack this problem I would be able to take it down to Tim J for you (as long as you can get it to me) some time in the next couple of weeks - I might be going down this Saturday. I would also be able to pick it up for you once he's hopefully fixed it.

    Cheers

Thanks Nigel - that's really kind of you :)

I'll try and have a look again tonight (or if not tomorrow, as I have the day off), then work out where to take it from there. Do you work in Nottingham as well as live there?

    FIXED :)

Was the CD tray closed switch not making proper contact, which I assume engages the CD mech. Needed a new belt in the first place, and I then think my clumsy offering up of the cams in the tray mech after fitting the new belt might have put the switch out of kilter.

Thanks to Martin for his great advice!

Just fixed mine reading this thread and others regarding the CD50. Never even bothered with looking at the service manual. I have inserted at least 20 burned cd's and it hasnt missed once. Everything switches into motion or non motion as it should now.

Not bad for a 26 year old "mono" switching laser.

    Thanks.

Bought this unit on a "for parts or repair listing" and using this thread and others like it had it back up and playing in less than an hour.

Initially the drawer would jostle around but not open without help, wouldnt recognise a CD or play a CD and would only eject out maybe an inch or so.

Now she plays anything I stick in itand open and closes nice and smooth.

Didnt even bother with downloading the service manual !

Bought this unit broken. Tobacco smoke nearly killed it. The tar plaque was so bad the drwer would no longer open or close properly. the belt was spun out. and rotted. It couldnt read a CD.

but using this thread and other like it i was able to get it going again. Seems to be working much better and doesnt sound too bad at all. realigning all the gears wasnt as tough a task as I thought it would be.

    Hahahhaha!!!

i need something to read while I perform the sound checks. The Parts Express catalogue is a little bland form my tastes. The middle contact was a bit tempermental at first but as the new lube gets moved around and the loading tray glides more freely the switching issue has gone away. Doesnt skate at all when I am playing Cd's. so far it has played everything I have fed it.

EDIT: Sorry guys. Call me a spoil sport but this was not appropriate content...   Wink
