I noticed recently that the suspension on my 4002 turntable was sagging.  After acquiring the proper wrench (7 mm, if anyone is interested), I set to work.  The front and right rear springs were easy to adjust, but I can't figure out how to get under the left rear spring to turn the bottom nut.  Any helpful hints out there?  I'd rather not disassemble the entire turntable.

Yes, Andy, I have the manual.  It's not a model of clarity.  Looks like I may have to remove the power transformer to get to the bottom adjusting nut.

From what I remember (it's been a while since I worked on one of these) all of the adjustments are done from above - like adjusting tappets on a car engine. There should be no need to access anything under the leaf springs.

You have to loosen the nut on top of the spring, then turn the nut below the spring down a turn, then tighten the top nut.  The lower nut on the left rear spring is not accessible, UNLESS (which I just discovered), you remove the dust cover, and tilt the back piece of the case back slightly.

There are at least two types of this adjustment. I just checked my BG6000 (early AC motor version, similar to 4000) and 4004 (clearly lighter built DC motor version). There isn't any need to go below the leaf spring on either of these.

On the 4004, there is no tightening nut at all, you just turn the top nut which can be done with fingers if you push the spring down to release the pressure.

On the 6000, you loosen the top nut and then turn the entire adjustment pole, there's a slot for a screwdriver at the end of it.

I believe yours is the latter type (upper in the pic), Steve?

I always remove the dust lid as a first thing when working on these to avoid accidents

The top picture is of the type I have seen. Never seen ones which require a bottom nut to be loosened before & seems a bit of a poor design IMO.

Yes, I discovered that the screwdriver slot in the top of the adjustment post did, in fact, turn the lower nut.  I've completed the adjustments.  Unfortunately, on giving the turntable a try, I discovered that the light in the control arm has gone out.  That may be a brick wall, since these bulbs are probably no longer available.  Time to buy a Rega, I guess....
