A must have for any music enthusiast would be a sound system knowing every nook and cranny of it. I can decipher good and poor brands to an extent. Can anyone recommend any books covering the basics of music technology from the ground up?

Not really what you asked for I know, but Mastering Audio — The Art And The Science, by Bob Katz is a really informative read about what finally makes it onto CD, the process, the technique and the technology.
