    TVs - Options, options ...

    Hi

I would value your opinions on the best way to go on a replacement for my trusty old MX7000 which has gone on the blink after 17(?) years of unblemished service.  It seems to be something to do with the power supply and is probably repairable, but I think it might be time to get another set.

I'm looking at options for a second hand tv - partly because of budget limitations and also because I'm wary of spending a lot of money on a product area which seems to be in flux at the moment.

I expect I'll use whatever i buy as a main set for 3 or 4 years and then look to buy again.   I'm not into movies and rarely play DVDs.  Having said that, if I buy toward the top end of my budget I'd like that TV to be well specced (eg HD) and to have some future use elsewhere in my house as part of a ML system.

My budget is £3500 (if I went new), £2500 for 2nd hand.

I think my options are -

Beovision 8 - 40: Yes they're not 2nd hand, but do seem to offer comparatively good value.

Beovision 8 - 32: 2nd hand - but not many about, don't have uprated sound, not usable as ML master?

Beovision 6 - 26: I like this option - but can they act as a master TV with controllers for sky and apple tv etc?

Beovision 5 - 42: Possibly not in budget. Long in the tooth? But I'd love this option too - thoughts?

Avants and Beovision 3s seem priced to be almost disposable, but I'm not too keen on their bulk - I want something relatively flat at the back so I can position it neatly in my room.

Once again folks, I'd very much welcome your thoughts and opinions.  (And I apologise if this topic has been done to death previously on the the forum.)

    Hi Pestria,

I think best option, I would go for, is BV5 ! Excellent TV and now really a good bargain.

You can check Lifestyle-av.co.uk   link     And I think you are in budget with BV5

Number 2 on my list would be Avant 32 DVD, ridiculously cheep now, I don't need to tell about quality ...

Good luck with your search ... Smile

I'm with Nikola, I bought a BV5 this summer, and must say it's one of the smarter things I have ever done. Laughing

Since I like you don't watch much DVD's, don't care for BR (yet!) and don't have HD cable TV, I don't see a point in getting a HD TV. For the money you get a lot of design and TV when buying a BV5 these days.

Granted, they are getting old, and can't tell how long their lifespan is...

    The BV8 is nice, but design-wise it's no BV5.

Perhaps this is getting boring, but I'd probably have a Beovision 5 as well, simply because of design. Beovison 8 40 would be my second choice. It's better proportioned than the smaller Beovision 8 32 and combined with the bigger screen, uprated sound and better specs also better value than the 32, at least in my humble opinion. I can't help you with the ML issues...

Beoworld's twenty-eighth ninth prize winner and fifty-first second prize winner. Best £30 I've ever spent!

I've never seen the picture on a BV5, but past reviews of the set have been lukewarm. Home Cinema Choice gives it 3 out of 5 stars. Now I know all reviews are subjective and many are based upon comparing what is available elsewhere with what B&O charge for the 'same' product, but nevertheless it's hardly a ringing endorsement. And the review I referred to was dated in 2005 when, even then, the BV5 was considered to be behind the game in features. How would it compare now?

I realise though that in this case we are talking second hand and not new prices.

    Pestria,

I understand that for a B&O fan choosing a new TV is never easy but are you are making life more difficult than it needs to be? There's a huge difference in size between a BV6-26 and a BV5. Viewing distance alone should help you reduce your options.

    True.

I suppose I'm trying to decide between getting the modern equivalent of what I've alreay got - Beovision 6/8-32 against an upgrade that's within budget (BV5/BV8-40).

The problem is slightly complicated by the fact that I'm not living in my normal place for the next year or so, due to work, and therefore a smaller set is more practical.  But, I will move back after that and then the smaller set will be less useful and probably 'relegated' to a non main room.  So paying a lot for a small set just to use for a year or so doesn't seem sensible.

BV8-40, if you like the look is more future proof. Full HD and DVB tuner.

Its between the 5-42 and the 8-40 for me. Based on your relegation point, then the 8-40 is the way to go. If you choose this option its also much more futureproof.

Increase your budget and get a BeoVision 10-40 - the features of the BV8-40 and the looks (but modernised) of the BV5. Having said that, I am thinking of a BV5 - the picture quality is very easy to watch and is ridiculously cheap now.

Must have missed something - I don't know anything about the BV 10-40.  Can you point in the direction of some more information please.

    Thanks.

The BV10 has not been released yet, and no photos have been leaked yet, but it is rumoured to look very nice, and I would also advise you to wait until xmas.
