Beomaster 5000 (80'ies model) humming when turned off.

    Hi there

The other day I noticed that my Beomaster 5000 is humming slightly, both when turned off and when on. There is no hum in the output signal, one can only hear the hum when one lays the ear to the Beomaster. Also I noticed that the beomaster is developing some heat (not that much, but some), even when it is turned off. How worried should I be about this? Obviously the amp is more than 20 years old, so perhaps a check at a workshop is due, but on the other hand, it is working beautifully when turned on and playing.

    Thanks for your advise

     Chr.

Your Beomaster has a transformer running from the mains at all times supplying voltage for the processor etc. (standby).
In some cases, it can help if you take out the mains power plug, rotate it 180deg and insert again.
Having said that, your Beomaster will always hum a bit, that's unavoidable but it
shouldn't be annoying. Like most other 70's and 80's B&O, the
capacitors will eventually get tired, some losing capacitance, others leaking current placing a stress on the transformer and power supply
so a recap could be adviceable.

Thanks Martin, I'll try the rotation-trick. The hum is not annoying in any way, just odd. I am more concerned about the heat. Is it normal that it generates heat when in stand-by? At the moment, it is switched entirely off, as I don't wan't the room to get any hotter (In Denmark at the moment, we got clear skies and 30 degrees celsius, a bit too hot for me).

    best regards

    Yes, it's incredibly hot.
I'm on the road today but long for my little workshop.

The heat sink will be a bit warm at the extreme right side, this is normal, but only just enough for you to feel that it's "alive".
Any warmer and it should be checked.
