    MMC repair through http://www.schallplattennadeln.de

I tried them and got an MMC2 back this week. For 159,- Euro (including postage from Germany to The Netherlands), they replaced the cantilever, the stylus and suspension, using a  nude line diamond stylus with a sapphire cantilever. It really sounds like new again!

I bought a Beogram 8002 of eBay last year in a beautiful condition, but it came with a broken MMC2, which I thought I could just throw away. Last year I also got an SMMC2 from Soundsmith and really liked it, but it always bothered me that it didn't have the words Bang & Olufsen on it. Unfortunately I dropped the SMMC2 and the cantilever broke.

I called Soundsmith to check if they could repair my broken SMMC2 and MMC2, but since the cantilevers on both had broken of, they couldn't repair them. The price of a new SMMC2 from Soundsmith is suddenly much higher then last year and you also have to pay high import taxes if you live in the Europe.

Looking around in old posts on Beoworld I found the website http://www.schallplattennadeln.de/ and decided to give it a go, sending them the MMC2 as an experiment.  Within a week they returned it and it's working great. For those who have broken MMC's, it could be a solution, since it's very nice to have an original B&O MMC on you record deck, plus no import taxes for EU citizens on the transaction.

    Just Splendid!

The need of re-newal arised lately, since I think my Sound-Smith has been somewhat worn during only 1,5 years playing! I sent this German company some questions regards to the repair.Looks promising though. The biggest problem with Soundsmith is the customs fee related.

I will chat to Lee and see if we can't do a feature on this. I have a collection of cartridges of various eras that need mending and this could be an opportunity as well as being informative for other users.

It's been a lucky B&O day today. Got the repaired MMC2 back from Germany and a new aluminium plate for my Beolink 7000 from Sweden. Put it on and the Beolink 7000 looks like new!

Been in contact with Axel and I am having three cartridges restored and will report on the progress. Just packaged them up so will post them tomorrow. Seems very friendly though not able to do photos of the work as it is all done down the microscope.

SmileTook about one week to get it back. I've only been using it for some 20 minutes yet on the worlds best vinyl record ever - BACK IN BLACK by AC/DC. But the "surgery" seems to be a success. The end of the cartridge has been opened so I assume there's replacement suspension, cantilever and needle. Axel also re-tips SoundSmith SMMC4 should the need arise. It seems like a bargain to have the cartridge re-tipped at 100 euros, when for an european customer SoundSmith new one costs abt 200 euros. Axel sells also SMMC4 directly at a cost of little over 200euros and then you dont have to pay customs fee. Thumbs up for this one!

Apologies, but I'm yet another of those "horrid" Brits who doesn't speak another language...

From what you are saying on this thread, it may be well worth their while doing their pages in English for us poor unfortunates...Big Smile These old cartridges are still too good to let them fade away (I currently have an original "new" MMC20CL on the go).

    Just got my cartridges back.

MMC2 which had a snapped cantilever - completely replaced - as stated above, Axel obviously cuts the end off the front of the cartridge to access the suspension. I will be doing pictures soon! Very nicely done.

MMC5000 - this has a new aluminium cantilever and Shibata stylus fitted - sounds as good as my SMMC20EN but I will also do a full review.

MMC20S - this has also been fitted with a Shibata stylus and will be fitted to the Beogram 4001. Might need to be renamed! MMC20SH maybe? Laughing

I am most impressed with the work done and the end product. And at a much better price than the Soundsmith alternative as well as maintaining the original style.

This is going to be good news for many Beogram owners!
I presume you are back from Fredes, Peter. Have you got your 5000 back?
I gather you will do a thread about this, and your trip??

    Indeed good news !!!

I have contacted him by email and received a full answer by return email the next day.

I was waiting on some feedback from this forum before making my decision, but will now go for it and send my mmc2 over to have it fixed.

    Regards,

    O.
