    Beogram 4000 arm lowering problem?

    Hi

Haven't used my beogram 4000 much for about 6-8 months now but having finally gotten my vinyl sorted out (i.e. put them out so that I can get to the records easily) I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Well the good news is that it all still works.  The bad news is that the tone arm seems to lower very slowly onto the record and then it takes ages to find get 'into the groove'.  In fact having tried with a number of different records last night I noticed that once it finally lowered you could see the stylus clicking onto the intial groove but not finding its way into the 'playing' area.  You could see the stylus assembly moving/flexing as it clicked around on the initial groove area.

Once its on the playing area things seem ok, but it does take a while to get the sound out of the record - you can hear it at the deck but not amplified and then it kicks in.  Playing around with the tracking weight seems to resolve this issue but not the problem it has geting into the groove.

Also, when I tried lowering the needle onto the middle or end of the records it again took a while for the amplified sound to come out of the speakers.

I stopped messing about with the tracking weight in case there was a bigger issue that I should be resolving first.

All the connections are ok.  I just wonder if there is some issue with the arm taking a while to be fully lowered and therefore not connecting with the record properly?

    Any ideas?

UPDATE - just tried it again in the daylight and it seems as if the needle is not dropping on the lead-in groove and the clicking and flexing I can see is it trying to get onto the lead-in area (or so it seems).  Is there an adjustment I need to make somewhere?

    Cheers

Very common problem and probably due to the mechanism between drop arm solenoid & the tonearm. There are a couple of pivot points which become stiff over time due to hardening of the old lubricant. You need to clean off the old lubricant and apply some fresh silicon grease. It has been covered a few times on here so a search of this & the workbench section should find you some threads with photo's of the offending parts.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

I'm not familiar with this machine, but I would imagine there is some kind of muting circuit so that you don't get the thud when the stylus 'lands'.
Perhaps it is staying muted too long because it hasn't completely landed.
    Just a thought.
