I havving a problem with my B&O 8000 receiver.  It had been working fine until yesterday. At the moment, all the lights go on, but it does not work.  The turntable works, but not the receiver.  I did have a power surge in the room a few days ago, but not with the electric wall outlet that the system was plugged into.  The power surge was resolved, not by reseting the switch on the the main apartment circuit breaker panel, but by simply pressing the surge button on two strips that I was using in the other part of the room.  The lights never went out.  I mention all this to let you know what has been going on, but I don't think it has anything to do with the B&O which is in the other part of the room and connected to another outlet. 

Anyway, the prolem is that the light on the recevier goes on, the panel lights up,  but it doe not work.  Does anyone have any ideas about why this would happen suddenly?  The sytem had been working until yesterday.  Any advice you might have would be really appreciated.  A visit to my local B&O fiix-it would correct the problem at a high price in Manhattan--and I have no way of really telling what the problem is.  Donald

By not work, I take it you mean everything functions but you get no sound? If you use the record player and try to record, is there output to the tape player? That would narrow down the problem. I suggest however that it sounds like a component failure as opposed to an easy fix. How good are you with a soldering iron?! Mine did something similar a while ago and I had a bag full of capacitors and variable resistors changed. A big bag!!

has your receiver always been in stand by mode and you had a powerloss

then i would suspect the electrolytic capacitors in your main supply unit.because

they have been working with  prepower during that time and with a powerloss

they are not able to recharge

Hi Peter:  The unit turns own.  The panel lights up.  That's it.  The radio does not work and it will not respond when you press any of the buttons.  The receiver does not control the turntable.  The turntable works only if you manually start the turntable.  Thanks for your quick response.  Donald

Hi Peter:  The receiver turns on.  The panel lights up.  That's it.  The radio will not go on.  There is no response to any buttons you press on the receiver.  The turntable only starts if you manually start the turntable.  The receiver does not connect to anything or control anything.  It just looks pretty.  Jan said that it might be a problem caused by the inablity to recahrge after a power drop.  The problem, or course, is that a trip to the B&O fix it place in Manhattan is going to be expensive no matter what.  Does this sound like a capacitor problem to you?  Many thanks for your quick response.  Look forward to hearing from you fruther about this.  Donald

PS..I had a power problem one day last week on the other side of the room.  A heater connected to an outlet strip which was connected to an outlet in the wall--not the one that the receiver used and not the same outlet in the wall used by the receiver.  The whole room is protected, in addition, by a circuit breaker on a master panel..The lights did not go out in the room, but there was a loss of power on my computer and other items on the other side the room controlled by the strip that the heater was plugged into.  Maybe there was enough of a power drop over all in the room to affect the strip with the receiver--even though the receiver was not plugged into the same strip or the same outlet in the wall.  Sorry for all this detail.  Donald

The common problem with this model is the capacitors and variable resistors, particularly in the power supply. Does the test for the microcomputer work? (Press Monitor and stand by when the set is in stand by) If you get the display TP, the computer is at least working. However I think this needs a service - surprised it has not had one before - mine needed it about 10 years ago!

Some months ago my Beomaster 8000 was kind of doing the same thing. It would not respond to the terminal. I could use the buttons but not the remote. As Dillen had gone through every other bit it had to minor.

I opend the front panel and carefully touched the wires that connect the boards. It turned out to be a loose connection in on of the wires. Dillen send a replacement and it has been working since.

I do agree that if the Beomaster is still unserviced it might be time.

Hi Peter:  Update:  WHen the unit is on stand-by, you sometimes get the panel lightes and other times not.  I have disconnected it from the wall outlet a number of times to check.  This morning--no panel lights but later this morning panel lights returned.  I then followed your suggestion about the Monitor button.  The panel lights stayed, but no change in anything else.  Donald
