    2402 platter noise (scraping)

Hello, perhaps there is someone who has an answer, I have yet to find this question online.  Have a Beogram 2402 with a scraping noise when platter rotates.  Also have a parts piece that found for a fair price (presumed they might come in handy).  The spare turntable does rotate-motor works, tested platter on spare-no scrapes (platter not bent).  I surmise that it is a bearing problem-although spare unit bearing seems to be in same condition, but, no descernable noises from it, is this a matter of replacing bearing, or, swapping whole unit sub-assembly??  Do not wish to take on task of rebuild before doing some research (ie. homework) first.  thanks, Dan

    Re: 2402 platter noise (scraping)

    Hi Dan,

Welcome to Beoworld !   Yes - thumbs up

Hard to diagnose without hands-on but I once had a Beogram like yours in for
    repair with symptoms like yours.
It turned out that a production label (serial number etc.) found on the
chassis, under the platter, had turned one corner upwards enough to touch the underside
of the platter, producing the noise. Glueing the label back on solved the problem.

Besides, a certain amount of noise can sometimes be heard if the platter is rotated with no
record on, because of the mechanical record sensing system.
This should be considered normal and will not be present with a record on the platter.

    Martin

Appreciate rapid response, but, also have a 1602, and, yes, the label did scrape when I got it.  Scraping is with or without record installed.  It is evidenced by rub mark on base top, under platter "drive wheel".  Thanks, Dan

    Re: 2402 platter noise (scraping)

Is the platter sitting flat - ie:- at equal height with the top plate all the way round?

If not then it may have a "low" point which is causing the scraping noise. There are 3 adjustable suspension points spaced equidistant around the subframe under the platter.

    Chris.

    Re: 2402 platter noise (scraping)

Back to the matter at hand-  The drive wheel (on which the platter rests) is scraping on the frame, or, chassis.  My feelings are that it's the bearing, but, is that a non-servicable item?  i have another sub assembly, but, if this the problem can just the bearing carrier be replaced, or, rebushed.  Thank you again, Dan    FIXED IT!!!   THE FIX-I USED GREAT CAUTION ON THIS ONE.  with sharpie type marker, hold pen at area of platter wheel and wait to hear scraping.  In conjunction of noise with actual scrape on frame touch wheel with marker, to establish point of problem.  Now, CAREFULLY,and, gingerly (with unit turned off) use slide jawed pliers-yes, pliers, and, grip inside edge of drive wheel -between spokes(where black plastic shield rests) and, bend or twist upwards.  The object being is to take low spot out of wheel without cracking, breaking, or distorting wheel.  good luck ONE PROBLEM-ER-CHALLENGE SOLVED ANOTHER ARISES.  TURNS ON, ROTATES, ARM SWINGS OVER, ARM DOESN'T DROP, RETURNS TO STORED POSITION.  OH WELL.  I AM DRIVEN!!!
