which receiver to keep the beomaster 4500 type 2965 or the beomaster 5000 type 2321

Hi all it's your newest and probably most confused and yes maybe stupidest member,I recently decided that I would drag out my record collection from the deep dark recesses of the cupboard but hey no record player, so I went on trademe [local ebay] and bought a beogram 3000 type 5905 and then the beomaster 4500 thinking it was just an amp, the word receiver hadn't been mentioned and having no speakers I just didn't know, I then bought very cheaply a 7002 system just to get the beovox s50 speakers,I then saw advertised the beomster 5000 receiver and thinking hey I really need a radio I bought it and it came with the 5000 master control panel, all of this came to about NZ $1070 plus $100 to have new rubber around the speaker cones thats about 300 pounds. So people what do I keep ?oh I also have beolink 1000. this whole thing is new to me in the seventies I had mostly cheap japanese systems ,I must be going through a midlife crises or is 60 past midlife, I just want to play my WHO collection again they play here on march 21 day before my birthday what a treat . so sorry about the long winded ramble ,what do I keep?

The BM5000 is a much better amp than the 4500 but I am not 100% sure you can use the BL1000 with it. The 4500 is a much prettier design and will be easier to connect up to other pieces of equipment. In my opinion I would go with the 4500 or even use the 7002 as they are very underated and will probabley sound nicer than the 4500.

the 7002 has the turntable and receiver all in one which I didn't much like the plastic cover is damaged and no needle and they are very expensive I am told

The 5000 is by far the better amplifier, though you cannot use the Beolink 1000 with it at all, unless you get one of the ultra-rare code converters that several of the members on this forum are currently actively seeking. If you want to use the 5000 with passive speakers alone (it doesn't have powerlink sockets for active speakers), then I'd keep it and sell the 4500. On the other hand, the 4500 is better looking, so you might want to keep that if looks are your number one priority. What means more to you: looks, or sound quality?

I would use the 5000 with the Beogram 3000. You have the MCP so the remote is less of an issue. Much better amplifier, both pre and power. The 5000 was very well made and had a great sound. Yes, it does not work with the modern remotes but if you are planning to use it with LPs, it will be great. Look out for some better speakers if I were you. If you see a pair of S120s, get them! These really sing with the 5000 and are going to help you get the most from your records. Also look for an original Beogram 5000 - again beautifully built and in my view sounds better than the later tangential decks. Should be very cheap though well worth getting a new Soundsmith cartridge at some time.

thanks all for your input  I may go with the 5000 as I know it was serviced less than a year ago as for buying more gear I may have to recover from my latest blunders and try to sell the unneeded bits first thanks again

I don't think you have blundered at all! You have bought some good equipment - the 4500 is one of the most popular Beomasters and the Beogram 3000 is also sought after.

    agreed... no blunders at all!

you picked some of the very best pieces in their respective categories! i have the same pieces (less the s50) and i would have trouble narrowing them down.

    welcome to beoworld!

     ++++edit++++

just had some clear thoughts regarding your specific desires... i'd sell the 3000, 7002 and 4500 and concentrate on the 5000. take peter's suggestion and find a matching bg5000. that will get you up and running. then you can start looking for the matching bc5000 and cd50 (cd player) and the smaller 5000 terminal. over time, you will end with a great "matched" setup! if i can find the time, i will upload a pic of mine...

    Hi metalas,

If you do decide to keep the Beomaster 4500 to use with the Beogram 3000, please bear in mind that you will need a pre-amplifier, as the Beogram 3000 does not have one built in.  This is not difficult or expensive to sort out and would give you an excellent system that would work with your existing speakers and also be "future-proof" in that it would accomodate Beolab active speakers in the future if required.

Personally, I think that the 4500 looks great as well!  Whichever set of kit you decide to keep (I say keep it all!) Party!!! then I think you have got some great hifi equipment that should give years of enjoyment.

    Best regards,

    Steve.

    Hi Metalas.
If the 5000 is anything like the later 7000, then mute function does not work on Speaker 2, only on Speaker 1.
Could it be you have accidently pressed mute on the front panel?

    Hi Andy,

There is a common fault with Beomasters of that age, where the relay that mutes Speaker 1 can fail, causing a loss of sound on one or both channels.  I always think that the Speaker 2 output gives a better quality of sound than Speaker 1, even on Beomasters that are not faulty.  I use Speaker 2 for my main room output on my Beomaster 3500 and Speaker 1 for my extension room, where no serious listening takes place.

If Speaker 2 works, then I would use that connection instead.

    Best regards,

    Steve.

thanks steve I was a bit worried I'd bought a lemon it does sound good out of speaker 2. Don't seem to get much response from trying to set the time and date on the MCP I'll start by putting in new batteries but I don't think that's the problem  might just be me not knowing what I'm doing yet, I may give the 4500 a run and see if sounds better or is easier for this HiFi ignoramus to get his head round.cheers

Hi AndyT read your thread on renovating the s120 speakers, great story and picture board, makes me glad we have a really good audio sales and repair shop here in Auckland [Axcent audio] they specialise in good quality audio gear,my s50 speakers that they did the same job on sound great I was interested to hear they will improve as they loosen up, I thought that my $150 less than 50 pounds equivalent was well spent you have the patients of Jove.just an aside my s50 have the  overload ,when I look these up on beoworld they don't seem to have this are mine of the last produced , also are you audiofiles out there under rating what sounds like a really good speaker,[ just asking .]  Thanks Andy P. alias metalas
