RL 140 repace woofer foam with rubber

    Hi there,

I have been in contact with one that repair woofers. He suggested repacing RL 140 woofer foam with rubber. Woun't rubber change the characteristics of the woofer in a unknown/bad way?  The person said, that it surely shouldn't be done on middle tone speakers, but it should be no issue on woofers of size 6½" and larger.  What is the Beoworld members take on that?

Is modern foam more resistant to rot, than the foam used 10-20 years ago?

    Best regards Nis

Yes it can change the response, depends partly on how good the folk are that do the work, but that would be a quality issue more than a technical one.

Ultimately, yes it will make some sort of change, but you are unlikely to hear it and it would take some fairly sophisitcated equipment to measure the differant frequency response.

By this age, the type of speaker surround material is of less significance than replacing the capacitors in the crossover network, you will be surprised at the differance this will make.

     Go for rubber surrounds.
