Hi Folks - first time post here. Apologies if this is a newbie
question asked a million times. I have done a bit of a search of the
forum but can not find the answers. Please redirect me if a thread
already exists. 28 years ago my parents bought a B&O TV - it
is still their main TV and it is still the best TV I have ever seen or
heard. Its has had its guns boosted about 10 times and a new power
switch. I have spent the last 10 years trying to convince them to get
a new TV so I can inherit this one! No Joy :-( I think they want to
be buried with it. Anyway - last night my BUSH tv popped - my son knocked into it and the colour has gone all over the place. so
I am now in the market for a new TV. Wife convinced of second hand
B&O. Ebay search saved and monitored regularly. But which one
should I bid on? Not having followed the models and reviews as they
came out I am a bit clueless. here are my requirements. CRT ONLY
- It seems I am not alone in thinking that flatscreen is not all that.
I want CRT becauase it has decades of development behind it, will not
be going on a wall - so depth dimension is not important. I will not be doing anything with blueray or HD size
has to be above 24" (current bust tv is 20" and too small) personally I
think bigger is better but wife may need convincing. Looks:
colour and style not particulary important they all seem to look
beautiful anyway, same goes for sound - I'm not a massive audiophile
and I'd imagine they all sound a zillion times better than my mono
BUSH. (I'm guessing they are all stereo)? I dont really need a
rotating stand or curtains or other gagetery - but I have no aversion
to them. Have small children, so stability would be nice - I dont want something that they could squish themselves under! I have an ext video and DVD that I would be happy to use - so I'm not really interested in what is integrated into the telly. Age
is not that important as I'm guessing it will be reflected in price and
after all....28 years on my parents one. I have a good TV
repairman on hand also to boost tubes etc Cost is not really an
issue but the fact I am buying second hand gives an indication that I
am after a bargain and dont have "NEW TV" money to spend. I guess what I'm after is something as nice and reliable and sturdy and sexy as my parents TV
Have big car will collect. Many thanks in advance

Hi Sly...,
WELCOME! If i should choose an used CRT tv i would go for a BeoVision Avant 28/32 DVD(built in DVD=only one remote). The picture is superb and the sound even better. Only minus is the sheer size of the television. If smaller is wanted i would go for a BeoVision 1 or a BeoVision MX8000 depending on you want 25" or 28". The only minus with these are the format; Avant is 16:9 the others are 4:3. If price is important i would go for a BeoVision MX7000. Excellent design and a very sturdy television. Very low repair costs. It doesnt matter which one you will buy, you will firsthand experience what a Bang & Olufsen can give you.. Cant wait to hear what you choose.

Thanx ever so much for this - exactly the sort of advice I'm after. You guys should have a pinned thread like this for every product range, eg 1 for speakers, 1 for sound systems, 1 for telephones etc etc BTW I have a B&O telephone - probably one of the favorite things I have

I agree - look for an avant with RF tube. They are selling ridiculously cheap at the minute - I missed out on a 32" RF DVD a couple of days ago which sold on ebay for £500 on a buy it now, I was gutted by being beaten by the press of a button. You won't find a better CRT TV anywhere, don't be tempted by a curved screen one (particularly the 28") as the tubes in most of these are now failing and are very expensive to replace and nowhere near economically viable. Chris.

Many thanks, I was slightly leaning towards the Avant models! But what is an RF tube? will the seller specify this? How do I identify a curved screen one? surely all the CRTs have slightly curved screens - thats partly why I want one! Interestingly - none of the ones on ebay are like my parents - all much newer!

I imagine you parents have something like an LX5500. You can get something like an LX6000 for less than £100 these days. The MX range come a variety of sizes and both of these sets will probably have a better picture than the widescreen ones. However they are getting old. I would agree with the above and get an Avant RF. You can tell these as the entire front is a glass screen. Beocentral does a good description.

I was in same situation like you ! And I was bought Beocenter 1 from Lifestile AV. From my point of view BC1 is the most beautiful CRT TV on the market EVER produce, sophisticated design, slightly curved front glass, triangle speaker cabinet, (look at the new beovision 4 and beolab 10 ) beautiful choice of different motorize stand, truly B&O design, outstanding picture and sound quality, even it looks astonishing from back! This peace of equipment is an art, stand alone sculpture.... that have some sound and emotions even when is turn off :) Do I need to say more.... :) Second one is Beovision 3 - 32, same picture qualiy like an 32 avant! great ! Happy buying :)
when your Black Label begin to taste like juice just take shot or two of Absinthe and
after that quench with some vodka, if you still feel juice like take beer

RF= Real Flat. Fairly easy to distinguish - all of the DVD models have them & only the later VHS versions. Also when you look at the profile the screen is absolutely flat as a pancake, with the non-RF there is a slight curvature. If you're in any doubt simply ask for the model number from the back label and cross referrence it to the different versions on the Beoworld products pages. Chris.

burantek:
Thanks for the plug Jeff. If you want a widescreen TV then as suggested Avants are fantistic value at the moment. Or look at the BV3, built on the same chassis(Internals) as the Avant. Craig

Wasn't it just the 32" BV3 that shared the Avant chassis Craig? I'm pretty sure the 28" BV3 was an entry level TV, I know you like yours Craig but to be honest the styling of the BV3 never quite cut the mustard with me - dunno why... Chris.

Chris you are correct, the BV3-32 has the same chassis as the Avant. Where the BV3-28 shares the same chassis as the BV1. Craig

Wow Thanks guys - soo much info - what can I say? nice little community you have here! Well I also popped into my local B& O dealership in the hope of finding an employee who had been there long enough to remember the old CRT models. Would you beleive it the had a 32" RF avant in the shop - someone had traded it in! well it seems ok to me tube count was 432 days - audio count was double that. £500 what do you guys reckon? Ironically my parents have now decided that they want to get a new TV!!!

Hold your horses Peter! My TV is old, but not that old! He wrote 28 years so I guess it must be one of these.

Jandyt:32" RF DVD, £500! I would bite his hand off!
Me too! Go back and grab it before someone else does, you may even get a few months warranty thrown in Chris. EDIT, having thought about this, it may well be that the customer who traded it in used the £500 discount voucher for a working TV trade in against a new BV. In that case the dealer may even take less for it as the discount is a company led intitiative. Either way £500 is still a steal IMO.
