    Stylus enquiry

    Hi guys

I am a first time poster on here but have been very appreciative of advice on the forums in the past.  I have a query about stylus, and its not the one about where to get new ones!!!!!!

     1.  Are there specific stylus that are only meant to be used with tangential beograms?  Or alternatively are there stylus that can be used on both linear and tangential and if so which are they please. If some do fit on both is there a chance of damaging my records?

     2.  I have a MMC20S that I am looking to utilise on a higher spec than the BG 3000 I have (the really old one with the plastic front and buttons), which other beograms would accept this stylus, I am sure I have seen a tangential BG advertised with a MMC20S but can't remember where. Specifically interested whether it would fit a 5005 or a tangential 3000.

    3.  Is there a list anywhere (not including the soundsmith one which only recommends their stylus models acceptability) that actually lists which stylus can be used on which system please.

Thanks for your help in advance

    1. All MMC20 fits the older Beograms pre 1981 mainly. You can use a MMC20CL on a Beocenter 2000 or a Beogram 4000 if you like.

All MMC 1-5 fits from post 1981. Again the MMC4 can fit a Beogram 8002 and Beogram 2000 as an example.

    2. The Beogram 5005 takes MMC 1-5 and the Beogram 3000 also.

    3. Soundsmiths list is good enough if you look at which stylus fit's your Beogram.

The MMC20S is the lowest in that range and not something to bring out the best on a tangential Beogram. They were fitted on the cheaper systems like the Beocenter 2000.

Are you sure you have a Beogram 3000? I can only think of ones that take the SP range and the MMC1-5.

I agree with Peter though there are the odd ones out there. Like this one I currently have on the bench.

That has the converter on it - I have just sent Frede one of those! In some ways, I think the SP12 can match most of the newer cartridges anyway.

Yes. And in my opinion the MMC20S looks a bit ouf of place on the round arm. Being black doesn't really add to the beauty either.

Well you learn something every day!

Where on earth did you find that picture Peter? Didn't even know it existed.

Thank you for all your help guys, most appreciated.

Peter , you are spot on it is in fact an old BeoGram 2202 that I had the MMC20S from.  Not the nicest lokinng BG and the first B&O deck I got before hearing the sound and pretty much instantly upgrading.

I have another question please.  I recently (inadvisably) ebay purchased a SP stylus and it came with an extra pin , the extra pin is central as well as the usual arrangement around the circular shape of the plug, obviously this won't fin t in my deck due to this, is this an american version? and if not, if I remove the additional pin would this still be usable?

    Thanks again for the help

I rather like the 2202 - very good sounding deck as well. I don't like the lid though - rather flimsy.

You do have some interesting bits! Not come across a 5 pin SP either! The US market was no different from the EU in this respect. I would love a picture - can you post one?

You can email me the photo if you want and I'll try posting it for you.

The way to upload a photo is to click on the options tab when compiling a post and use the add/update button to browse for the photo. There is a size limit though.

    My e-address is medogsfta@aol.com

    Hi Peter

Have tried posting the piccie of the 5 pin SP, but file size and my inability to communicate in binary means that I can't get it up, file size from the camera is too big as well.

Have you got an email address and I can send it across if you want to see.

    Re: Stylus enquiry

Well that was a right old palavar getting that to download - I won't go into the geeky boring stuff and appear sadder than I really amGeeked (the truth is I basically winged it)

Any way here's the photo of the strange 5 pin SP cartridge, never seen this meself so I'll hand it over to our resident cartridge guru - Peter.

EDIT - is it just me or does there appear to a missing 6th pin?

Forgot to add - many thanks to Sean for the photo.

    Re: Stylus enquiry

Well that is unusual! If you look at some SP cartridges, they do have a dimple in the centre but not a pin. This is clearly an earth pin and I guess it is an early type which fits an early deck. What type of cartridge is it? An SP2? My SP2 has 4 pins though.

    Martin will know for definite!!

The dimple between the other pins is often seen - there is one on the other side as well.

    Hi guys

Thank you for uploading this medogsfat

It is an SP12, you're right Peter, the extra pin is in exactly the same place as the usual dimple in the centre of an SP stylus.  Do you reckon if I removed this it would still work?

Bit of a long shot but it is not very useful as is.

    Re: Stylus enquiry

Well I reckon that this is an earth connection but I would be tempted to give it a try. However I reckon the actual cartridge could be an early one with an SP12 case on top. I would be tempted to get another cartridge body - I'll swap you a cartridge with 4 pins for your 5 pin one rather than wreck the odd one! PM me your address and I'll send you the cartridge body and if it works with your SP12 stylus, you can send me the old body. I'll need your address - send me it by PM rather than posting it on site. I take it you want a 12A rather than the one with the 1/2" mount?

    Re: Stylus enquiry

I couldn't agree more regarding saving that odd one. I did notice the odd dimples on several occasions but never saw one with a fifth pin. If someone knows about it, it must be Frede. He's far better with them olde SP's than I.
