    BM8000 or stay with BM6000

I am sure that this is a dilema which many of us face with B&O equippment. I currently have a BM6000 connected up to a CDX playing through a pair of S80.2's in my bedroom (It makes a lovley clock radio!) and it sounds great. The BM6000 is in perfect working order. Now, I really fancy a BM8000, I know it would be total overkill in the size of room its in but how many people actually need the equipment they have and if you are going to buy older equipment that you lusted after, why not get the best. What I want to know is would I be able to tell the difference between a BM6000 and a BM8000 at low volumes (I never really get to above 20) in this set up or would it be a heart over head purchase. Also my 6000 needs no work but it seems you seldom get a fully functional 8000. But an 8000 just looks soooo nice!

Could some one with some sense please stop me!!

    Interesting choice!

Me and Friedmett both have these systems, so he might want to add something here too.

I have a full Beosystem 6000 playing through some Beovox MC120.2 speakers in one of my spare bedrooms. I was tremendously lucky to be given the system for free, and though the Beogram 8002 and Beocord 8004 needed/need attention respectively, I have found listening to this set up really enjoyable in a relatively small room. I also was given a CDX2 with this system, and have listened to this mainly, until late last week when my Beogram 8002 arrived back from repair. Because I have had to squeeze this system in a smaller space than it truly deserves, I really only listen to volumes up to a maximum of 20 on the Beomaster 6000.

Downstairs in my living room I have a Beomaster 8000 hooked up to a Beogram 4002 and CDX, playing through some Beovox Pentas. My living room is large, and I regularly listen to the Beomaster at volumes between 4.5 and 5 - this is quite loud!

I would say go for the Beomaster 8000 if you really want one either because you must have the flagship model (this is why I bought mine), or if you think at some stage you'll get a bigger room/house and will want to take advantage of the greater power output. The 8000 has a better build quality IMO, in that the feel of the construction is more solid, and this certainly comes across in the weight! Be aware though, that even though the Beomaster 8000 is better spec'd, it lacks the clock facility so you'll need too use a Beocord if this is important to you ;)

Personally, I love both these systems and think that in 20 years they'll be viewed in the same way that the 1960s Beolab 5000 setup is today. In short, if you like your Beomaster 6000, you'll LOVE a Beomaster 8000!

Friedmett - what do you think?

My Beolab 8000 system has the Beomaster 8000, Beocord 9000, Beogram 8002 and CDX with Beovox M150 speakers + remote.

Everything got together around march 2008 and finished in june so currently everything is in great working order. It sounds great and acurate with monitor M150 speakers. Every unit is as strong as the other and sounds are pretty even. Yes a well recorded tape can sound as good as the Beogram 8002. It does not matter it does great. Volume is straight and clear regardless of the setting.

The glass has a some scratches and a button was broken. Electronic gone through so 100% in order for some time forward.

One day in november 2007 there was white Beosystem 6000 on Lauritz.com and I could not resist so I got it. To keep it short the system is now complete and fully working exept the Beocord. The system consist of: Beomaster 6000, Beocord 6000 and Beogram 6006 with Beovox S80.2 and S120 + remote.

Now I have a hard time deciding which system is better. What I have come down to is with S80.2 and S120 the sound is 98% the same as the Beolab 8000 system. As the systems are in the same room I can a-b them and if I try radio channels I can't tell a difference.

Just the other day I listen too Master of Puppets by Metallica on 180 gram reissue vinyl through Beogram 8002. I then took the record and played it on the 6006 which again gave the actual same impact. I'm a musician so my ears can tell if tones are changing or are different.

I have tried the Beovox M150 with the white Beomaster 6000 and the difference is not that big with a Beomaster 8000 if there is anything at all.

S80.2 and S120 works brilliant together. S120 is louder but owerall they handle sound just as well as the M150. S120 on it's own close to M150 and S80.2 alone needs more power directly compared to the M150.

Every B&O item is serviced by Dillen exept Beovox M150 and Beocord 6000(it's going to soon). The Beovox S recently rebuild.

S80.2 in the front row. While being rebuild the S120 were for sale near Dillen so I got them rebuild too. A sucker for white?

At the moment I stick with both systems. The sound depends on the Beovox much more than the Beomaster in this case and at low volume it's more the question of what design you like the most. Me? I dig white, the timer functions, the smaller size and the fact that I own it in greater condition than the Beolab 8000 system. They perform identical but I can't say WOW to the 8000 and asume that the 6000 can't do the same.

The BM8000 won't act as a clock radio. It doesn't have the clock and timer functions.  Laughing

No and there you have it. A complete Beolab 8000 system fully functional and everything but to get up at the right time you have to settle for less like your cell phone.Big Smile

I could live with that! I might stay with the 6000 for a while at least, but if an 8000 appears I might get tempted. The white 6000 set up is lovely, did the 8000 come in white?

Yes it did! Good luck finding one. They are very rare even here in Denmark.

You can download the 1982 Dutch catalogue here on Beoworld but the scan is not the best.

Re: BM8000 or stay with BM6000

I have restored a bm8000 recently and I have compared it to my bm6000 also recently restored. I use a pair of M70s and I must say that both of these beomasters sounds great. Powerful and dynamic. My opinion is that the sound from them is quite equal. I wouldn't need the 8000 for more power output, but I would want it in my collection because it was a top of the line product at that time, it's lovely construction and of course this gigantic receiver is very nice to look at. It still raises some hair on my body when I see a bm8000 although I've been workin with a couple of them through time and I would have to be familiar with them now. But no.... it's just have something....

Had both. The 8000 is the one I have kept because it is the flagship an because I have a 4400 as well which is very similar in sound to the 6000. I think the 6000 if anything sounds sweeter than the 8000 but agree with the above statement that the speakers make far more difference. Not so keen on S80s but S120s are great. However I find all the late Uniphase speakers sound a little sharp and prefer the original Uniphase speakers - M75s or M100s are still my favourites.

PS. Just noticed that the picture in the description of the S80s is one of a pair of S120s!! The S80s do not have the grille at the bottom which hides a bass reflex port! Here is a picture of my old S80.2s!!

Here is the S80.2 in white. Rebuild by Dillen. First time with stands!

Here is the S120. Rebuild by Dillen.

I hope we can get my S80.2 and S120 under the products page here on Beoworld. White were custom order only!

Send me some pictures - as bland a background as possible - and I'll put them on. The server is a little flaky at present but I'll do it when possible!

Re: BM8000 or stay with BM6000

I've got two 8000s and one 6000. I prefer the 8000s, but the 6000 is not bad at all - it sounds real nice, and I like the looks of it even though it doesn't really have the same build quality as the 8000. You need both! :-)

So the white speakers were custom orders? They seem to have been popular in Sweden though, when it comes to the last uniphase range I've seen more white speakers than veneered ones. It would be nice with a pair in white, but they are often yellow now :-(

...speaking of Uniphase speakers: I've noticed that the .2 series have different midrange units than the original series. Was there a big improvement in sound quality?

That white Beosystem 8000 in the dutch catalogue is great, I would love to give one of them a home. But I dont think I had really noticed just how massive MS150's are!! I dont think they would fit in my bedroom unless I got rid of the bed. I will definately keep my eyes peeled for a BM8000 and maybe some white speakers though perhaps not ones that are so big.

Re: BM8000 or stay with BM6000

As for size of MS150 they are a bit taller than M150 so it's not too bad.

Yellowing is bad for white but the only thing on the Beovoxes shown here were a yellow circle on top of one of the S80.2 and it was gone with a bit of polish.

White edition 6000 is slightly yellow compared to my Beovision LX5500 which is piano white and black. It's not easy to take pictures of and you can see the standard slight yellow in the 82-85 catalogues along with the text oak and white to order.

The balance of white is right on with the full system but it depends on the lightning.
