    speaker choice

Help needed, i have just bought a new home and was very fortunate that the seller left me 3 b o tvs

    2 beovision 6 and a beovision 4

I called b and o and said i was interested in some speakes for my new system, and to cut along story short they are bringing over some beolab 5's times 4 speakers today for a demo at my home, Ive only just found out the price on the net and to say im very shocked at the prices is a understatement.

Iam really only going to need speakers for movies, do i really need 4x beolab 5s or will the beolab 9s be ok, or does anyone recomend anything else.  the tv is a beovision 4 65in with a beosystem 2 and it has been upgraded to HD.

Also I cant get my playstation 3 to play on hd setting, I had tryed to set connections, but it still doesnt work, can anyone help

thanks in advance, and love the website,

Any of the B and O speakers will work, although the 4s might be a bit small. Most people use lesser speakers in the rears. We have 9s in front and 1s in the rear. Preciously had 1s in front and 6000s in the rear and before that 6000s in the front and 4000s in the rear.  We have been happy with all of the settups but the 9s are by far the best.  Pick the ones that have the right combination of price and performance for you.

    Beovision 7-55 with Beolab 7-4, 9s and 4000s

    Beovision 10-40 with Beolab 1s and 6000s

    Beosound 1, 5, 2000, and 3000

    Beotime, Beotalk, Beocoms

Wow!  Four BeoLab 5.  Amazing.  If you can, BL 5 upfront, BL 9 rear or BL 9 X4, or BL 9 front & BL 3 rears.  For the surround effect, audition BL 7-1, 7-2, & 7-4 to see which one sounds best and also fits your decor.

Enjoy & post some picks when you get it all done.

Four beolab 5's definitely will be an over kill. My current setup is front, beolab 5's; center, 7-4 and for surround, beolab 3's mounted little high on the back wall. I must say that in my current setup sound stage is amazing for music and movie watching experience.

Consider 4 Beolab 3s and a Beolab 2. Or 2 Beolab 9s at the front and Beolab 3s at the rear. Beolab 5s are wonderful but spending £20,000 on speakers would not be my first priority after moving house.

There are alternatives to the above - Beolab 8000s front and Beolab 6000s or 4000 rear are a common option.

tried that set up a minute ago, 9s and 3s fine for music, but need a lab2 for movies, so still not sure, 9s suit my room more than the 5s

That is very fortunate! Regarding speakers, it really just depends what you want and what you want to spend. With Beolabs, the more you spend, the better the sound you will get. BL9's i'd say, are good all rounders. BL9 x4 would really kick a$$.

    Re: speaker choice

Work out a budget first some cheaper options are.

Medium B&O price option - BL9's at the front, a BL2 sub and BL3's in the rear.

You could go for BL8000's at the front, a BL2 sub and BL4000's at the rear.

    You are very lucky....

    Re: speaker choice

BeoLab 5s FAR more than match their price tag. Have a listen to them and you may well find the price tag justified! Either way, if you would prefer, BeoLab 3s are very ideal as rear speakers as you can get them wall mounted high up (which the rear speakers almost always should be).

Either way, bear in mind that sound is half the picture and it therefore logically follows that if you're spending nearly £20k on the BeoVision 4 (with BeoSystem 3), you should look to spend near that on the speakers.

As far as the centre channel goes, you have 3 options, the horizontal speaker (which is available in two sizes), a vertical speaker and a 'triangle' speaker. The latter two would provide a better sound when used with BeoLab 5s, so I would personally opt for them instead.

If you don't want to spend the money on the BeoLab 5s, I would recommend BeoLab 9s with a BeoLab 2 (although the BeoLab 2 is only necessary if your room is very large). Bear in mind too, BeoLab 9s + a BeoLab 2 isn't that far off the price of a pair of BeoLab 5s, but the BeoLab 5s will offer a much higher standard of performance.

    Re: speaker choice

Alex is absolutely right as far as value for money goes with Beolab 5's - you get a great deal for your money. However you need to tailor your sound to both your budget and your environment. Beolab 5's are remarkably good but would be of no use to me in the house in which I live - a definate case of overkill I'm afraid!

Beolab 9's are exceptionally good and possibly even better value pound for pound than Beolab 5's as they are far less obtrusive and still deliver exceptional performance from such a small cabinet.

I can only echo other Beoworlders comments that you are very lucky to have inheretited such an outstanding system with your homw purchase.

Speaker choice is an inexact science at the best of times and is such a personal issue that the only real advice that we all agree on is to look, listen and then finally decide for yourself.

    Re: speaker choice

really pleased with everyones help on this,  the demo lasted around 6 hours showing me various equipment and they also set up my ps3 which was causing a lot of problems due to a software issue, really please with b and o store professionalism and they never once over sold the product, which I perfer

The lab9 went really well at the front the lab5 were taller than the bottom of the beovision4 screen so didnt balance visually for me, they offered me 2 used lab5s 4 years old for around 4k off list price so worked out cheaper than new lab9s and a lab2 , but just cant live with the lab5 in my room as too tall.

for my square room it went as follows for me,(im no expert)

     for movies lab5/ lab 3  were 9.5/10

for music the lab 5 lab3 rears were 10/10

perfered front lab9 with lab3 rears and lab2 for movies  10/10

perfered lab9s and lab3 for music with lab2 switch off   9/10

At rear the wife dont like the lab3s to modern for here so may have to get lab9s at rear as well (although havent listeed on this as they only had 2 lab9s. this is what they have price me on though

what should i be aiming to pay for a new set of lab9s if i buy 2 sets and a music player, i have been offered a small discount at this stage.

I never would have dreamed i would be paiding 10 to 14k for a speaker set up ever, but when someone leaves you a 65 beovision4 and now i have heard the sound in my home for myself, i dont have any choice, i have to have them, lol.

will post when i have my tv room instalation completed.

what was strange was, watching casino royal on b and o dvd player was no difference to blue ray ps3 in picture quality. you tell them apart.
