Anybody that can help: 7-40 / BC2 functionality

    Hello everybody,

I'm relatively new to the world of B&O. Recently I exited the high end stereo, and sold my Audiovector/Arcam stereo. Instead I have purchased a 7-40, BL9's and the beocenter 2. A stereo which I truly appreciates for looks AND sound (BL9 seems extremely neutral and crisp compared to Audiovector. Maybe I would have preferred a little more mid range.. but interesting sound)

     Now the problems:

P1) What is the digital out for at the beocenter 2... It seem to have to do with the surround in the 7-40. Since I don't have DVD in the Beocenter but in the 7-40, will I need this digital out connection to the 7-40 ?

P2) Masterlink in 7-40 is currently connected to an MX4000. What with the masterlink from Beocenter2 to the 7-40.. (I only have one masterlink connection in the 7-40)

P3) Do I really have to press list, AV, CD on the remote to listen to CD/Radio over the 7-40?

P4) Why can't I adjust the volume on the BC2 (Finger on volume ring) when playing over the 7-40 ? I have tried setup but the BC2 says in the display that I have to adjust volume on television. (Dosen't the volume on the BC2 work)... And how does it by the way know I'm going to use a TV in the setup... (I haven't given any input during the setup)

P5) Could I improove the sound of the BC2 to go directly to the BL9's avoiding the surround in the 7-40 ?

As you all can appreciate I'm new to the world of Powerlink MK3, Masterlink and all that kind. I find it truly interesting though, and are looking foreward to this brave new world.

Best Regards, The Dane (The land of milk, honey and B&O)

Welcome to the World of B&O, you will not regret (but your banker may do)

2/ You can cut the ML cables and use a small junction box sold by B&O to create a cable with 3 or more branches. Or you can use a bigger junction box that has got 6 ML sockets, and you plug 3 ML cables in it.

3/ No you have to set the TV in option 2 and the BC2 in option 0, see the manual of the Beo4. This setting assumes the speakers are connected to the TV only. If the speakers are connected to the BC2, you use option 1 for each and you have to use the AV button. I would not recommand.

4/ The surround of the BV7 is only active in speaker 3 and speaker 5 mode, otherwise it is simple stereo. By default the BV7 uses speaker2 for an audio source (CD, Radio). You can change or check the settings in the sound settings of the BV7.

I do not know if the BL9 have a digital connection, like the BL5, in that case, and only from the CD you would get an improved sound.

I did not understand the option part on Beo4 ?? Downloaded the manual, but it doesn't say much on the area.

    Re: Masterlink and other

You can change a setting called "option" on most B&O products.

This is done with the remote.

A device in option 0 will not receive the Beo4 signal anymore.

A device in option 1 will only receive the Beo4 signal that corresponds to its type. A video product will respond to TV, V-TAPE, but not CD, Radio. (and vice versa)

A device in option 2 will receive the Beo4 signal for both audio and video functions.

    ---

Other option modes are available for link rooms.

    ---

If your speakers are all connected to the TV, the TV should react to all the Beo4 buttons (option2), and the BC2 should react to none (option 0).

The BV7 will drive the BC2.

Press LIST and ST.BY at the same time, cycle up until you see OPTION? and press go, cycle until you see A.OPT? and press go, then press 0.

Press LIST and ST.BY at the same time, cycle up until you see OPTION? and press go, cycle until you see V.OPT? and press go, then press 2.

You could have saved a bit if you had ordered a BC2 audio only (and use only the BV7's DVD player)

1.) Digi out on BC2 is for BeoLab 5's or fully digital speakers.

2.) BV7-40 should be connected to BC2 via master link and powerlink straight to BV7-40, with MX you will need a masterlink spliter that will allow you to use more than one masterlink item. This will communicate the three items and send sound between the three. V.opt 2 for BV7 and A.opt 0 for BC2 (audio) this will allow the right communication.

3.) The sound will then defult to speaker two when listening to CD, radio, AUX and Speaker 3 or 5.1 when watching movies, T.V, ect. You should also then be able to operate BC2 by the unit instead of remote. remember to set the right audio options in the BV7 menu.

Option settings are basically something B&O started doing back in the 80s, where you would tell each component of a system what it was connected to and how it was set up. For example, option 1 tells it to only listen to it's own commands, ie, a TV would only obey video commands from the remote control, and ignore audio commands such as Radio or CD. Option 2 tells it to also listen out for audio commands, and when received, go looking for an audio product which isn't in a link room. For this situation, there is option 0 which tells the product to completely ignore ANY signals it receives. This is needed when, for example in your situation, you have a TV and an audio system in the same room, if both received the same commands, you would end up with all the commands going through the system twice.

It can all get a bit confusing, as there are other option settings as well! It's something a lot of people never grasp, but you don't really need to. You set it once, and leave it. It'll never change...

Connecting BL9's straight to BC2 or through BV7-40 will not make difference to the sound. It's simply information being sent to the speaker as the cross overs and amps are in the speaker so there is not loss of sound. BL9's to BV7-40 is the correct way. Have fun.

Funny when I first replied there was no replies at all. Now a whole thread in a matter of minutes. Very usefull.

Jez, Alex and P... All of you, thanks for your very usefull reply's....

I'm beginning to like this universe of Mastelink, Powerlink's and lot's of people sharing the hobby. Looking forward to the day when I can help out new-comers!

My B&O dealer tells me that B&O informed him there could be a quality loss going via the surround module instead of directly.

Also, Is it right that I only need the digital out from the BC2 in case I use the BL5, i.e. not for BL9...

Even if you connect digital, you need a fully cabled (MKII) powerlink cable, for when you play radio or other sources. Only the CD/DVD uses the digital output, I read.
