    Who is Soundsmith?

I have seen the name Soundsmith mentioned over and over again, so I’ll bite, who is Soundsmith? I realize that I should know the answer to this question, but since I don’t, I need to ask.

I just purchased a NOS 20CL on eBay and they offered me a second one today. Yet I wonder even with it 20Cl being NOS, the dampening could have deteriorated.

I am guessing that Soundsmith rebuilds cartridges, but are they really good and where are they.

    Soundsmith

A highly reputable company who (amongst other things) build brand new cartridges as well as repairing used ones. They have the official approval from B&O to reproduce new cartridges and supply them to dealers worldwide.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

Superb hand made cartridges - IMHO better than the originals. My only grouse is that they look a bit handmade and do not match the silver arms of the Beogram 4000/8000 very well. Their answer is that they are more bothered with sound quality than looks and this is perfectly fair. But I would still like a silver SMMC20CL+ !!

    Peter:

Is the Soundsmith cartridge body of the 20 series made out of plastic or metal? It looks like a molded plastic from the photos.

The outer cover is plastic but there is an inner metal shell.

    Re: Who is Soundsmith?

I just purchased a NOS 20CL cartridge and the firm found a second one, which is available to me. However I have four 20CL cartridges all in reasonable condition and currently in use with my Beogram 4000, 4002, 4004, and 8000.

However I wonder if the stylus is in good shape, does Soundsmith replace just the damping, which is a concern after all these years and leave the stylus and cosmetic appearence alone?

If this is a stupid question, I apologize. However I really don’t know the answer.

I would be very unhappy to lose the beautiful aluminium external appearance of the 20CL if that is what is required in a rebuild. However, even with a NOS cartridge the damping could well be bad... or so I have been told.
