    Smoking Beomaster 8000

    Evening All

Just hooked up my BM 8000 for the first time since I moved house, and thought I detected some interference on the left channel. As I've been using new speaker cables, I thought that perhaps I'd got the polarity wrong or not screwed the DIN connectors in all the way. Anyway, tried shifting the balance to the left channel and as I did so, I noticed a whiff of smoke from the back of the heatsink. I turned the BM off straight away, then checked all the connections and tried if it again. Ever since it's been running and playing sweetly.

Does anyone know what happened? It might have got some dust and muck in it when it was moved and sat around whilst I was decorating, but I'm worried I might have blown something acting as a fuse or failsafe and really shouldn't be using it. I'm prepared to get it seen to if poss, but am reluctant to post it anywhere due to its delicate nature and extreme weight regarding cost of postage!

    Thoughts would be appreciated!

Check inside the DIN plugs on your speaker cables, both ends if possible.
Could be a stray wire strand shorting the terminals.
The Beomaster 8000 will drive even very heavy loads,
all the way down to 1 ohm or even less and one single
wire strand will easily glow, smoke and eventually burn through
without causing permanent damage to the Beomaster.

In this case the smoke would most likely come from the DIN plug,
which is just in front of the cooling fin.

Great - thanks Martin. Will check in the morning.

BTW thanks for the 19v lamps. Will post a pic of the Jet Present 607 (was listening to tonight with both dial lamps glowing!) soon.

    Best wishes

    Hi Martin

You were correct. I had left the unterminated ends of the speaker wire a little long, and where they stuck out of the back of the +ve and -ve DIN terminals they were exceptionally close and I can easily see how one strand could have shorted and burnt through. A lesson was learnt though about taking the time to be thorough with fine details like making sure the DIN plugs are wired correctly and there isn't excess wire floating around in there - I was eager to listen to my set up again, and after carefully running the cabling round the whole room, the last job was to attach the DIN plugs and I was obviously carried away at this point and made a bit of a hash of a simple job!
